The best cost performing method to study a language is to talk to yourself. You can do it as much as you want, anywhere you want. The only associated cost is social, as people around may think you’ve gone insane.

@Langaholic Figuring out connections between languages is my drug.

I just produced so much dopamine from organically figuring out that the Indonesian word “Menerjemakan” comes from the Arabic word “Tarjama”, meaning “to translate”. They both share the consonant cluster “T-R-J-M”. Normies will never understand this pleasure.

Every other person tells me they want to be a polyglot. Lovely. I’d also like to be rich, fit af, and a rockstar. What are you actually willing to sacrifice?

Or simply because learning is mentally stimulating and fun? "Useless" is a pretty harsh descriptor and reveals a lot about the person using it. Keep learning!

What if you are learning it because you want to speak to your partner? Or to fit in when living in a foreign country? Or to feel more connected to your ancestors?

It's so irritating when people describe a language as useless. This is a symptom of society having conditioned you to view anything through a lens of "will it make me money?"
