Aang removing Ozai's bending falls under the permanent damage of that, labor does not, I fear. Labor is only violent if the person is being harmed, community service isn't that.

Questioning the morality of it in a time without the worry of a war needs to be liberal, they're literally building a new city and have to question things like that.

Not all punishments rely on violence (i.e. community service) but it's hard to think of other solutions in a panic. And it is that deep, it would be beyond cruel if Aang took away the bending of any other character.

Korra does not boast, she has confidence in her abilities and that confidence is really only in season 1

@anime_daily Toph had struggles though. She was confident, but not arrogant. She knows she is the best, but is still aware of her weaknesses. Korra has no struggles, overly confident that it becomes arrogance, no awareness of her weaknesses (not like she had any), and is just insufferable.

And the beginning of the 3rd season is about how she is recovering from PTSD after the Red Lotus attempted to murder her in the Avatar state.
