Watered down communism mixing with watered down Nazism as the basis for a grand new American unity movement is nothing to look forward to. The strange bedfellows thrill may be exciting right now but in time it will grow tedious indeed. Not to mention ruinous.

For those who didn't grow up privileged, name something you thought was a luxury when you were a kid?

My Uncle Ted was a Marine Raider in WW2, watched a lot of friends die, while killing enemy soldiers from his fox hole on the beach. 30 years later, I was called to serve in the Japan East Mission (Tohoku & Hokkaido). For 2 years (72-74) carried Uncle Ted’s “Book of instructions for LDS military members” in my pocket, a reminder of Uncle Ted’s complete lack of animosity towards the Japanese. But he’d gladly shoot the SOB Generals who sent wave after wave of Banzai charges - forcing young Ted to machine gun thousands of young men hour after hour, day after day. If he could see Japan now, I know he would be pleased.

One night Elder Otani and I were chatting in our apartment and realized that my g-grandpa fought in the Pacific in WW2 and his did as well (on the other side). If they had met, their mission would have been to kill each other. And here we were, just a few generations on, with a new mission to bring the precious souls of Japan unto Christ together. And I think that’s pretty miraculous.

It amazes me how comfortable people are being absolutely vile and horrible to others just because they dont agree with their political views. Civil discourse is dead.
