I went to nine Lollapalooza in my younger years. Last week, my wife and I got the spontaneous idea to fly home for Lollapalooza. Run it back like we did as youths. Lineup dropped. I realized I’m old and don’t know any of these bands. And now we’ve got a free weekend in Chicago.

@andrewmercado If you have a family as a lower enlisted in the military you need SNAP. My pay wasn’t enough to cover food for my family as a new parent. It was absolutely a life line.

If you’ve got a problem with people using SNAP, do us both a favor and unfollow me. People who rely on these programs aren’t lazy or stealing. They’re trying to survive. I’ve been there myself. There was a time when I was working full time and still needed food stamps to get by. I served this country for 10 honorable years in the military, and even then life wasn’t easy. If ignorance is all you’ve got to offer, keep it to yourself.

Every year around Veterans Day, I try to get people to post photos of themselves in uniform that they are proud of. Inevitably, there’s always a slew of comments with people saying they really didn’t do much in the service. I don’t think that’s true. Hollywood likes to show acts of unparalleled valor, which leads people to think that that is the norm. It’s not. The military runs off of teamwork. Everyone has a specific job to do to make the machine run. If you’ve ever eaten MREs for weeks straight, you know how important cooks are. If you’ve ever watched someone suffer, you know how important doc is. If you’ve ever needed 123 batteries, which always seemed impossible to find, you know how important a good supply Sergeant is. If you’ve ever needed comms or had computer issues, you know how important IT is. The list goes on and on. Be proud of your service. Less than 1% of the population serves, and less than 7% of the American population are veterans. I’m proud of you.

@aspiringpeasant I don’t think people understand or care that if you have a family in the military as a lower enlisted, we had to supplement with SNAP benefits just to get by.

Many of these people have a job. Many of these people have multiple jobs. Many of these people have jobs serving the US military. And all of them are more in touch with their humanity and their souls than this cold-ass fuckwit.
