We [Australia] have got a really long history of being able to remain free from all sorts of different harmful pests and diseases, and that's the reason why we operate such a comprehensive biosecurity system - because we want to keep it that way...
Australian Academy of Science@Science_Academy

Our country faces #biosecurity risks daily that threaten our health, our environment, our economy... our very way of life. The Centre of Excellence for Biosecurity Risk Analysis has protected Aust from biosecurity problems that have plagued many countries.

Last day sitting at this magnificent desk, but the time has come to put my money where my mouth is and head back into practice. Academia, it's been fun.

WE'RE BACK! - The Society for Risk Analysis (Au/NZ) Conference is back in 2022 and welcoming abstracts on any/all things #risk: perception, communication, assessment, management, evaluation - particularly in the context of #sustainability. I look forward to seeing you in October!
Society for Risk Analysis (ANZ)@SRA_ANZ

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS! It is time to submit abstracts for presentations at this year’s SRA-ANZ conference, at the University of Melbourne, October 26-27 2022. Abstract submission closes September 30. Submission link: melbourneuni.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9A…

FMD may set hearts racing, but good biosecurity protects us from at least 16,925 other things as well - we need to shift the narrative to the 30:1 ROI (i.e., net benefit) of action rather than focusing on the past costs and damages of inaction. @CEBRA_UoM pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/an-ou…

There are at least 12 (prob closer to 20) risk controls in place, or available, to minimise the risk of an FMD outbreak in Australia and work continues to refine them. We've all got a role to play - be alert, but not alarmed.

Lots of talk about the 'risk' of an #FMD outbreak over the last month - up, down, unchanged - how do these relate to the official likelihood estimate of 11.6% over 5 years? And what can we do here, now, to minimise the consequences? - w @CEBRA_UoM pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/being…

Own a pet pig? Did you know that it is illegal to feed them food waste containing meat? Just don't do it - your pigs will thank you! (why from 4:00-) abc.net.au/southeastnsw/p…

@KirstieAndo Hi Kirstie, I'm currently finalising an article for UoMs Pursuit website about biosecurity risk in the context of FMD - and an image like this one would be a great addition - if you would be willing to share (entirely up to you) please follow me so I can send you a PM.

What disease, weed, pest or parasite biosecurity risk is impacting your business? These livestock producers put their top three into a risk matrix, how likely to occur and what level of impact. Now they know what to focus on when putting their biosecurity plan into action. 🤛📝

New Zealand's system of tracing sheep movements around the country could be a weak link in protecting against foot and mouth disease, according to a biosecurity risk expert. rnz.co.nz/national/progr…

#FMD in Indo, #Varroa in NSW, Myrtle Rust in WA: So much to cover in our @UniMelb MSc/MAg #biosecurity subject - this week 60 students will be reconstructing the spread of serrated tussock and talking to @DAFFgov CEBO Robyn Cleland - plus a few hours of me talking intro pathways!

Lots of talk about the [plausible worst-case] consequences of a hypothetical #FMD outbreak in Australia - but what do the experts that deal with these sorts of diseases every day estimate the likelihood to be, and how did they come up with that number? stockandland.com.au/story/7844411/…

The Senator is unavailable for the Country Hour today but... What do you hope a Senate inquiry into biosecurity will deliver? We are speaking about biosecurity more now than ever ... so if you could make a change to how we protect our borders, what would it be?
Senator Raff Ciccone@SenRaffCiccone

Maintaining confidence in our $80 billion agriculture industry is too important to risk. The Senate inquiry into foot and mouth disease and varroa mite is in addition to the strongest biosecurity response in Australia's history from the Albanese Government. #auspol #agchatoz

"The CFA didn't roll out for the first time on Black Saturday" is a phrase I use when talking about the need to exercise and test #biosecurity systems. I caught up with RNZ Country Life to talk #FMD, the ⬆ of M. bovis, and the ⬇ of paper based systems. rnz.co.nz/national/progr…

@itsnotfairman Was definitely a wild night. We had 150mm of rain through the gauge and sustained winds above 100kmh for at least 12 hours. Trentham, Woodend and MtMacedon were smashed, but old mate regnans in the Dandy's caught the media attention, as usual.

I've spent a lot of time in disturbed forests (severe fire, multiple severe fires, timber harvest, prescribed fire, and combinations of all) but the windthrow in the Wombat State Forest last year really is something else.
