Perfect timing for me to recommend this great book — The Crusades Through Arab Eyes

Someone else posted this but the spheres of influence map is more accurate. No one really de facto controlled this much territory at any point in that period. Trade routes overlapped and up until a few decades after the War of 1812, indigenous groups were still the dominant powers in many places west of the Appalachians.


i feel a total disconnect with the past when i consider the ‘electric can opener’. these were real, and ubiquitous. why? even if you ate canned food every meal, this seems excessive. there was, apparently, a kind of glory in electrifying any process: i cannot imagine feeling this
