@PAHoyeck Agreed. Their misunderstanding of a perfectly normal sentence is baffling.

By the time the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Squanto had crossed the Atlantic, lived in England for 9 years, went back to America, then was captured and taken to Spain. He lived in Malaga for 4 years. He went back to America and was there when the Pilgrims landed. Squanto knew English, certainly knew Spanish, likely knew a good bit of Latin, and was a baptized and confirmed Catholic. The Virginia settlers had been in America so long already that Squanto may very well have met Pocahontas in London (they were there at the same time). American mythologized history acts like the Plymouth Pilgrims practically beat Columbus to the New World.

Thomas Jefferson halted the Washington-Adams tradition of Presidents presenting their annual message to Congress in person. He thought it reeked of arrogant monarchy and Britain's "speech from the throne." He and later Presidents (until Wilson) sent annual messages in writing.

A great example of when someone today judges the people of the past without understanding the full context of their decisions. There's no reason we can't default to "They must have had a good reason even if it isn't obvious to me" rather than "They sure liked to be weird."

i feel a total disconnect with the past when i consider the ‘electric can opener’. these were real, and ubiquitous. why? even if you ate canned food every meal, this seems excessive. there was, apparently, a kind of glory in electrifying any process: i cannot imagine feeling this

There's a weird myth out there that the Maryland flag is a combination of Union and Confederate symbols. It is not true. Marylanders on both sides used the whole coat of arms. The state flag was not created as a bid to unite the two sides. This whole idea is fiction.
