Today, that skillset seems like a given (and practically a requirement) with the level of talent that the top SSDMs have on both sides of the ball, but Will paved the way as one of the first- and changed the position into one that a team could anchor a roster around.

I believe that Will is one of the few players that changed the SSDM position into what it is today. He excelled at every skill that a traditional SS needs- lockdown cover, team defense, GBs- but opponents also had to account for his speed and offensive ability in transition.
