@social_brains We made 6 learning module videos on quality data versus advice/authority/bad data. I’d love to embed it in a course. I’ve been teaching this as skills in my other classes and it’s harder than I think to get them into a mode of critical thinking.

Academics, I need your help in designing a new course (and please retweet so I get more fdbk). Many of our undergraduates seem unable or unwilling to discuss difficult topics. They seem to lack tools for understanding what counts as evidence and how to reason effectively in these real world contexts. It seems like they often mistake their feelings for reasons and evidence or simply don’t want to have to discuss or defend their views at all. As universities, countering this should be one of our primary missions so that we are producing a citizenry unafraid to engage on these topics and also willing to listen to and learn from those they disagree with. While it is often forgotten, this is the actual benefit of diverse perspectives. So I’m considering creating a course that not only teaches these skills but requires students to put them into practice, rather than just to learn them academically. Have any of you created a course like this or do you have a course like this at your university? If so, would you be able to share your syllabus?

An analysis of ~30M tweets by @knutson_brain et al. found that: -Biased news sources post more content containing high-arousal negative emotions (e.g., anger, outrage) -High-arousal negative content is more likely to go viral -The link between high-arousal negative content and virality is stronger for biased sources, but it's been increasing for balanced sources over the past decade journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

New paper in early publication at Annual Review of Psychology: @kurtjgray and I review how the mind makes sense of morality. We argue that morality is fundamentally tied to perceptions of harm/victimhood/suffering and discuss how to understand and bridge moral/political divides

@prestostwit Yeah, there is good social science that messages like "You take 5 minute showers, but a majority of your neighbors take 3 minute showers" as good for water conservation and "Your voter turnout vs. your precincts average turnout" for turnout... but this angle...

Today's mail: Let's talk about how this person could have flipped the message from surveillance 'we will know if you vote' to "whether you vote is public, but how you vote is private" 2nd approach is a more liberating message- ESPECIALLY for women in politically split households

Dimitrov has something very important to say. Please, listen. He has been dealing with anxiety, panick attacks and loneliness. It is important to him to open up as a man. This is an important topic. Interview done by @SpilXperten, who as the only written media present.

I stumbled on the Twitter account of a writer I admire and it’s mostly moronic, vile political content. Why why why?

LOVE this! It’s so apparent at tennis. Men put one arm around the loser while tapping a hand on their chest and saying something nice in their ear. Women often start turning away while still doing their nominal handshake and mumbling “good game”. Frans de Waal would’ve loved it.
