Apple's plan to make chips in Arizona sounds good, but there are quite a few caveats. macworld.com/article/142527…

“No, your next iPhone’s chip won’t be ‘Made in America’”
Solid take (by @pricivius) on coming TSMC chipmaking plant in Arizona.
Key point: New plant said to be set up for 5nm or 4nm (Apple’s current needs) but NOT for 3nm (Apple’s stated next needs).

I really resent the characterisation as “gloating” of people saying “This is dreadful and we said it would be and you absolutely hammered us for saying so.” That’s not gloating. We’re not fucking happy about it.

Lewis is right that these are objectively expensive, but I will add that when he told me how much they cost i was surprised it wasn’t more. So there’s that.
Lewis Painter@LewwyPaints
There’s also a quick story on the pricing (spoiler: they’re expensive) and when you can expect the cans to be available in your region: techadvisor.com/article/142792…
English

@paterfamilias But you’re right, we are in danger of going round in circles, so I will wish you a good day and thank you for the conversation.
English

@paterfamilias Oddly enough as I say in the article I actually agree that Apple hates (or at least has a very mercenary position on) free speech. I just feel that the logic Musk uses to get there is faulty.
English

Why does the tech press so freely adopt the Voldemort complex, i.e., “He Who Cannot Be Named”? That Elon is disfavored b/c he’s goring sacred cows … sure, that’s called disagreement. Bezos, Benioff, Gates, Powell Jobs, and even Cook spout off on a number of contested issues. 1/2

Apple absolutely has a free speech problem–just not the one Elon Musk thinks. macworld.com/article/139680…
English

@paterfamilias And you say you’re not thin skinned, but how would you describe someone who complains to a media site for being insufficiently deferential to a troll billionaire?
English

@paterfamilias If Musk makes an allegation - that Apple is threatening to kick Twitter off the App Store and hates free speech, for example - then it’s on him to prove that. He didn’t, and admitted it was a “misunderstanding”. Why are you defending him over this? It’s a weird hill to die on.
English

@paterfamilias It was just a parade of wrongness, and I find it bizarre that you’re being so thin skinned on Musk’s behalf about the way in which I expressed my disagreement with it. So I ask again: how should I have disagreed?
English

@paterfamilias He said they were going to kick Twitter out of the App Store, then had to admit this was a “misunderstanding”. He said Apple was imposing a secret app fee, when it’s something that is extremely widely known, complained and litigated about and covered in the press
English

@paterfamilias To be clear, could you describe for me the appropriate response to someone expressing opinions you strongly disagree with, when they’ve expressed many other wildly uninformed views before and are clearly looking for attention? I think “weary disagreement” is reasonable.
English

@pricivius Pure ad hominem. 1- Musk’s new business is eyeballs. If Macworld had someone as successful in attracting attention, you’d be rightly pleased. 2- To dismiss Musk as only being a troll is a severe understatement of real world success … despite the counter programming claims
English

@paterfamilias With people like Musk, even disagreement is a win, because their currency is attention. He isn’t entitled to a response, and I’d rather not give him one.
That’s nothing to do with the “threat to the magical community”, it’s because he’s a professional troll.
English

@pricivius But the premise of your criticism is ad hominem: “The best way of dealing with an attention-seeking child, in my experience, is to ignore them.” You’ve been forced to speak the name of Voldemort b/c of his threat to the magical community.
English

@paterfamilias I mean, I also object to the fact that his opinions are absolutely inescapable in the media, but that’s a separate issue.
English

@paterfamilias I’m not objecting to him having opinions, I’m objecting to the content of the opinions. That’s how this is supposed to work.
English

@paterfamilias I’m not shunning him, I’m engaging with his arguments in the marketplace of ideas. As the king of free speech I’m sure he would be in favour.
