The MK116 Mod 2 in 7.62x39 occupies a unique space in the modern rifle world. With a 16-inch barrel, it delivers the velocity and energy that made the cartridge famous, while retaining the ergonomics, modularity, and optics mounting options of the AR platform. One of the biggest advantages of the platform is its ability to run both supersonic and subsonic ammunition. The challenge is that those two loads behave like entirely different cartridges. A 123-grain supersonic load offers a flat trajectory and effective performance well beyond 200 yards, while a heavy subsonic load trades velocity for reduced sound signature and close-range utility. Rather than compromise, set the rifle up to do both.
