The President is the head of state, the face of the nation, and the constitutional choice of the majority. Regardless of one’s political views, respecting the office is essential for the dignity of our country. Insulting the President is akin to disrespecting the nation itself. While such behavior may have been normalized in the past, two wrongs do not make a right. As a society, we must rise above personal animosities and uphold the values of civility and respect in public discourse.

Considering the NPP Government’s super majority in Parliament, it’s important that the opposition has Parliamentarians experienced in the ongoing reforms to hold the Government accountable. I hope that the remaining National List seat of the New Democratic Front is given to @kanchana_wij. Kanchana led the most ambitious and difficult reforms in the energy sector in our country’s history. He set the stage for competition, transparent pricing and accountability in our energy sector. He did all of this knowing that the political outcome of his decisions would not be good for him. Kanchana risked his electoral prospects so that the ultimate winner of his reforms will be the Sri Lankan consumer. Today, Sri Lankans are no longer beholden to the CPC or @LankaIOCPLC when buying fuel. Likewise, if we follow through with his reforms in the Electricity Act, Sri Lankans won’t be entrapped by the high prices and frequent power cuts of the @CEB_lk either. Like telecoms and fuel, Sri Lankans deserve the right to choose their energy provider and to be free from monopolies.

The NPP have won an election which they were eager to get over with before their policy blunders became visible. Surprisingly, I don’t wish them well. The UNP, my party, must stop these haphazard alliances and truly focus on identity. The economic legacy is there to do so.
