I did a thing over the weekend😬 10yo me is soooo proud and overjoyed that I accomplished my life long dream of becoming a physician. Cheers to adding to the 2.8% of Black women physicians. I do it for the hood, bc we need love too🫶🏾👩🏾‍⚕️

Joanna is one of my former students & I served on her honors thesis committee. Her speech today on being a present, engaged, & intentional community member or villager (“it takes a village”) was phenomenal. I am proud of her & look forward to seeing how she changes the world.
Emory College@emorycollege

As Class Orator, Joanna Louis-Ugbo is the only student speaker at today's Commencement. Having learned the value of creating community at home, she reminds #Emory2026 grads of their responsibility to offer, not just seek, support to build their village: bit.ly/4woqvmc

Lauryn Carter was in sixth grade when she lost her mother to cancer. By eighth grade, she set her sights on Georgia Tech — even though the schools in Americus, Georgia, didn’t offer much engineering curriculum. On Friday — with the aid of a Tech Promise scholarship — she will graduate debt-free as a first-generation college student with a degree in industrial systems and engineering. At the end of the ceremony, Lauryn will turn a special tassel that features a picture of her and her mother, whom she says has been with her every step of the way. After graduation, she’s headed to Texas to work for @pepsi. #WeCanDoThat #GT26 💪🎓💛🐝

This is a perfect example of Genesis 50:20 "What the devil meant for evil, God meant for good" Mississippi paid Black students to leave the state rather than integrate #OleMiss. Then those same people came back with degrees from Ohio State and Michigan State and ran circles around everybody. The plan to keep them out accidentally built the most qualified teaching force in the Delta. Drop your state in the comments if your teachers had that same energy. Send this to somebody who thinks Mississippi don't have history worth knowing. #Mississippi #BlackHistory #SouthernCulture

There is no higher honor than receiving a vote of confidence from your students. I am elated to have been selected as faculty member of the year by the Emory NAACP. I love teaching history and I am grateful that my students find value in my lectures and mentorship.

Decided to run a minute for every year this morning. Today makes 59! First time though seeing these gator signs on the bayou! 😳 Shout out to @BCUAthletics VP Reggie Theus for the workout gear. Their baseball team recently beat SEC powers LSU & Florida!

At 42 years old, while serving as a sitting university president, I made a decision that many questioned. I went back to school. And yesterday, I successfully defended my capstone dissertation and have officially earned the Doctor of Education in Higher Education Policy and Leadership from @VanderbiltU. So next month I'm set to have my second professional doctorate officially conferred in Nashville. This degree represents resilience. From a young Black boy raised in East Atlanta where discipline, faith, and education were non-negotiable… To the UNSINKABLE @AlbanyStateUniv, where my confidence was shaped and my commitment to black excellence was forged in the fire of SW Georgia ….. To the @UGASchoolofLaw where my resolve to define my own destiny was tested like never before … To earning membership to the State Bar of Georgia and becoming a prosecutor… To senior leadership roles across multiple HBCUs… Each step sharpened my perspective on leadership, accountability, and institutional transformation. That preparation now lives in my daily work as President & CEO of Florida's FIRST HBCU @ewctigers. Since 2018, we have elevated EWU from college to university status, achieved @NCAADII membership, expanded academic programs, strengthened enrollment, secured millions in capital improvements, reaffirmed SACSCOC accreditation with no recommendations, and nearly tripled our endowment. We have also led through crisis. A global pandemic. Multiple bomb threats. And in August 2023, a racist domestic terrorist attack in the shadow of our campus. In that moment, I questioned everything. Leadership, in moments like that, compresses your world. But after reflection, I understood something clearly: Sharpening my leadership capacity was not a distraction from the mission. It was an investment in it. So I stayed. Not because I had time. But because the work demanded that I become better. At @vupeabody, I studied leadership under pressure, organizational change, and first-generation student success. I did not study theory for theory’s sake. I studied to refine and bridge scholarship to practice. This doctorate represents sustained discipline under conditions that would have legitimately justified my stepping away. So what does all this mean? It means refusing to stagnate. It means modeling that learning never stops—even when you are President. On May 8th, I'll walk across that stage on the picturesque Vandy lawn. And then as I’ve done countless times before I'll be on a red-eye that same evening back to Jacksonville. And then on May 9th, I will be present—fully present—to preside and celebrate the inimitable EWU Class of 2026. Because this is not culmination. It is calibration. And the work continues... LET’S GET IT! 💪🏾💯🙌🏾 #FinishEdD #HigherEdLeadership #HigherEdPolicy #VanderbiltU 🎓 #EmergingEminence #ForTheCulture #HBCUMade #GodDid 🙏🏾

"Do you have an idea of how we could solve the Black maternal mortality crisis if we can't say 'Black?'" I could watch Democratic House Rep. Summer Lee bat around RFK Jr. all day. She's magnificent.

My wife is traveling with a layover in Nashville and saw this ad from @MeharryMedical . I AM HERE FOR THIS! If you are going to do an airport ad, really any ad, if it isn’t something people will share and talk about, you’ve wasted your money. This is how you do an ad.
