Couldn't agree more - extremely concerning that the new government appears to be behaving in an authoritarian way, when we are clearly talking about an issue of conscience. (And saying this as a Labour member of some 16 years.)

(I remember talking to a railway employee 5 or 6 years ago, who said that it was then the most consistently overcrowded line in the UK - London area trains have rush hour congestion, but Hope Valley often busy all day)

@profmgilbert @diskoBiscuits @Ed_Clancy @LouHaigh It’s one of the things we’d really like to see happen across SY, but there’s a load of obstacles in the way - not least the history of bike hire schemes in Sheffield - and funding etc. I don’t want to set hares running, but absolutely watch this space. We’ll keep plugging away.

A fair few people worried about these words on active travel but taken at face value in context of the rest of the article it is consistent with a theme of devolution from the centre. And the Sheffield cycling comment is common opinion of many, including me before I got an ebike

Nearby cities like Nottingham have them - but, given the hills, they should be even more useful in Sheffield? (& if docked to charge they might not suffer the vandalism that plagued the Ofo bikes?)

I see it as a perfect opportunity for @olivercoppard, @Ed_Clancy and @LouHaigh to get together to demonstrate the regional ebike ambition of South Yorks and showcase how local leadership, powers and funding are more important than central diktat. And to get Louise on an ebike :)
