@whitherapathy Thanks so much. This is an interesting topic! I have sidled up to it on various occasions ... touches a wide range of issues: the needs of the economy, funding, what sort of institutions we need, the structure of the academic workforce, career patterns, delivery of teaching etc.

@profserious Beautifully written, and correct in every aspect. If you're open to suggestions for future blogs, what are your thoughts on the question of whether UK universities simply do too much research or, rather, too many people in UK universities do research as well as teaching?

@vulpine2020 @Adrian_Hilton @UniOfBuckingham To be clear, I agree with you in large part. I favour much greater liberalisation and deregulation. I am an admirer of what Buckingham has achieved, at we should acknowledge is a very restricted scale. I do not think it is the form of university governance that is the problem!

@profserious @Adrian_Hilton @UniOfBuckingham They’re not really privatised in any meaningful sense because of the fee regime in particular. Buckingham shows what some freedom can do but we should go much further (the other problems you cite flow from high levels of state interference in the market)

I agree with this (though haven't always, on the grounds of undergrad maturity). There is much to commend the two-year Bachelor's degree, which the @UniOfBuckingham pioneered (with a third-year Masters option), and it delivers admirably without any structural ‘squeezing’.
Anthony Finkelstein@profserious

Another Modest Proposal: 'being a suggestion for shortening the Bachelor’s degree, improving its efficiency, and rendering it somewhat more useful to students, universities and the publick' by @profserious profserious.substack.com/p/another-mode… #HigherEducation #Universities #AcademicTwitter

@vulpine2020 @Adrian_Hilton @UniOfBuckingham In effect universities are 'privatised', they are independent charities established by royal charter. The challenge is the regulatory framework, a market fixated on 'status', the controlled fee regime, and conservative university governance.

@Adrian_Hilton @UniOfBuckingham Just shows an advantage of being a privatised university: flexibility, competition, innovation. If we privatised all universities we would see much more of this sort of thing
