@profzeke Rewatching your #BookTV interview at Key School Annapolis on @cspan & you say "Right?" after every declarative point you make. I don't know rather it's habit or by intent but after the 20th "right" in 30 min I had to turn you off. Rewatch segment when you get a chance

I've been promoted to full professor! 🙏 Words are insufficient to express the gratitude and meaning of this step in my career. But words are all I've got. So here's my attempt to express what I'm feeling. You're highly likely to be one of the many who added a drop of belief to fill the cup of confidence I needed to make it. It may seem like a foregone conclusion in hindsight, but it was nothing like that in real time, as I try to explain in this article. (And if you have no idea what a "full professor" is, read along.) zekrets.substack.com/p/im-a-full-pr… #grateful #promotion #professor #academia #confidence #belief

If you ever need to restore your faith in America, go to a naturalization ceremony! Today I had the rare honor of speaking in one. Sixty three unique individuals from thirty two countries swore the oath of allegiance. The smiles and tears on their faces, and those of their loved ones, moved me deeply. Those faces spoke of unspeakable sacrifices, complex journeys, and tremendous potential. Those faces reminded me of what makes this country so special. And they restored my faith in a foundational American idea that's currently under vicious attack: that anyone can live their dreams in this land and contribute to the American project; that, in fact, this country (and many others) would whither away without newcomers. I was reminded me of my own naturalization ceremony in 2010. I would have never guessed back then that I would one day be invited to speak to new citizens fifteen years later. I spoke to today's new citizens about my mixed feelings back then: gratitude for my new country and concern about losing part of my heritage. I encouraged them to honor the sacrifices of those who made it possible for them to be here without getting stuck in the past. Insted, the best way to honor that was was to bring the best of themselves and mix it up with what's best about this country. Out of the remix will arise something new that will keep our culture, economy, and society ever fresh and vibrant. Here I am with the Hon. Wendy Beetlestone (who presided over the ceremony and kindly invited me to speak) and Katayun Jaffari (president of the Philadelphia Bar Association). So thankful for this opportunity!

Really thankful to see The Truth About Immigration as the #1 Best Seller on Amazon in the immigration category. These successes are ephemeral—it won’t stay on top forever. But it’s a good moment to express thanks to all those who’ve taken the time to read the book. I’m moved by your thoughtful and kind emails, posts, and messages of support. More than anything, I hope we listen to the evidence and do what’s good us and our communities by welcoming newcomers. Movement is good! Do you have your copy? Get it here: zekehernandez.net/book/

I'm not catholic, but my condolences go out to all my catholic friends who've lost a loving and compassionate leader who did his best to lift the downtrodden. I'm thankful for good people who use their talents to serve others. apnews.com/article/vatica…

Even if your country attracts a lot of talent, your local region may not! Really interesting study in PNAS contrasting the movement of scientists within vs. across countries. Understanding this is essential because the movement of scientists is essential to innovation, business creation, investment, and economic growth. Full paper here: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

"We need an entirely new system based on factual optimism rather than unfounded fear." – Zeke Hernandez Thank you to @profzeke for this month's illuminating conversation on the power of immigrants to impact our economy and society for the better.

Last night I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in @TheMiddle_Show (@NPR). I hope you'll watch or listen to the podcast (link below). We talked about how to improve the *legal* immigration system. You'll hear a variety of perspectives, both favorable & skeptical about immigration. I loved being able to listen, learn, & respond. This is exactly the type of dialogue we should be having right now! Thanks to Jeremy Hobson & his excellent team for hosting and inviting me. And to Alicia Caldwell from Bloomberg for being a great co-guest.

Snippet from last night's conversation @TheMiddle_Show. Why do so many persist in believing that immigrants take jobs from natives? Because they think of immigrants only as workers who fill jobs but do nothing else in the economy (spend, invest, innovate, pay taxes, etc). Once you understand that -- which the data shows very clearly -- it's not hard to see that the truth is exactly the opposite. Immigrants create jobs by making the economic pie larger and more diversified.

A much repeated claim about immigrants is that they take jobs away from American citizens. @Wharton professor @profzeke sets the record straight: Link to full show: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the…

Really looking forward to this conversation @TheMiddle_Show @NPR. Tune into NPR at 9 pm ET tomorrow! I don't need to convince anyone this is a timely topic. I hope it'll help bring some clarity to such a misunderstood but critical issue. #immgiration #facts #policy #prosperity

This week, we're asking you: what can we do to improve legal immigration? We'll be joined by @aacaldwellLA at @Bloomberg and @Wharton professor @profzeke. Listen live on Thursday at 8pm CT on your local NPR station or catch the YouTube livestream.

If you’re enjoying March Madness this weekend, don’t forget to thank an immigrant: James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. A few days ago I posted a chart showing how much we depend on immigrants for high-tech innovations in the form of patents. But we completely underestimate the myriad “lowbrow” innovations introduced by newcomers who bring new activities, artistic creations, foods, and services that make our lives better and more interesting. Just think of what you eat, watch, enjoy, and spend your time and money on. A lot of it exists thanks to people who bring different ideas and perspectives. Most of them aren't geniuses with advanced degrees in sterile labs. They're ordinary people who make your life better simply because their life experiences are a bit different from yours. #innovation #immigration #lowbrow #basketball #marchmadness

Here's a mindblowing fact: the share of US patenting produced by immigrant/ethnic inventors has risen extremely fast. You probably have a sense that Asian inventors play a disproportionate role in the US innovation ecosystem, but you may not realize just how much (Chinese ~ 12% of all patents, Indian ~ 10%). You may also not realize that the trend is growing for other ethnic groups, including Hispanics, that aren't traditionally thought of as inventors. This dependence of foreign-born talent to power innovation will only increase over time... If we're smart, that is. Data from this paper: pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/or…

Movement is good for innovation! Cool study of eventual Nobel Prize winners: Moving to a new location or having lived in multiple locations shortens the time between the start of an eventual winner's start their work and earn the award. This is well in line with a lots of research showing that recombination --> innovation and that movement --> recombination. Yet another reason why restricting human mobiliy is a bad idea!
