Two co-workers called out sick today. One of them got back from a week away in Vegas & has been off sick for two weeks. The other was out a couple of weeks ago with covid, now has pneumonia. I was asked to stay longer to help cover. My answer was no.🧵

Spoke to a doctor who mentioned colleagues are dropping like flies to Covid. She then said it will always be around like the flu but hopefully the warmer weather will improve things now.
How are we going to inform and educate doctors that Covid is not seasonal or the flu?

Interesting analysis by @JPWeiland shows that the optimal vax strategy for school aged children would be about two weeks before school starts, so they have peak protection just in advance of their highest exposure risk period at the start of school.
This, incidentally, also confirms the central role of school infections in driving the ongoing pandemic.
This should be strong motivation for all schools to be upgrading their fresh air ventilation, MERV13 or better air filtration, and CO2 level monitoring for all shared spaces.

I normalized % ED diagnosed Covid data for each age group across the last 21 months. It's quite interesting to see the return to school effect in fall and even after winter break. Other conclusion: The yearly peak for school aged kids happens the first few weeks of school.

Some feel I’ve been unfairly critical of FDA in regards to the updated Covid vaccine release. The goal of a vaccine is to prevent infection and/or harm from infection, and that requires vaccination BEFORE exposure. A update release after 1 million infections/ day and 1000 deaths/ week is by definition… a failure…

1 out of every 41 people in the US currently have Covid, with 1.2 million new infections daily. By the time updated vaccines are widely available, much of America will have already been recently infected. Another disappointing misstep in our handling of Covid-19. 😞

The positive tests are beginning to roll in from the DNC. What a shame. It’s Year 5 of the accelerating pandemic, & not cleaning the air or implementing public health protections was a CHOICE. “Covid no longer controls our lives” - Yeah okay. Magical thinking isn’t a valid public health strategy.

Just once I want to see a photo of someone infected at a super spreader who says “I wish I had worn a mask”. Or even “what could I have done differently - I don’t want to be sick”.
Let’s not make light out of COVID - let’s start a real discussion on how we can do better.
