Humor aside, I find it deeply unethical that so much taxpayer money is spent promoting irreversible medical procedures for others. “But it prevents AIDS!” Let’s examine that claim. First, consider that the U.S. does not recommend this procedure for adult men. That alone should raise some questions. Now, let’s flip the logic. If reducing HIV risk justifies permanent medical intervention, why not pay men to take GnRH analogues (puberty blockers)? These drugs are likely even more effective at lowering HIV risk. We were repeatedly assured that puberty blockers are fully reversible and have no lasting effects. If that were true, wouldn’t this actually be more ethical than circumcision? So, what makes one intervention acceptable and the other unthinkable?
