Tired, burnt-out, struggling to pay the bills, 2nd job, morale at rock bottom. @NaturalEngland staff not in a good place going into 2022. Years of poor pay, real terms cuts for many, no pay progression, not recognised compared to other environmental professionals 😠😞👇

Nice to visit the upper River Thame today with @DougskiK & @NaturalEngland to see a Nature Recovery Network in the making. Wetland creation & recovery of floodplain grassland with landowners willing to do more. What might it be like in 10 years? I am guessing it will be better.

Very knowing comment - years of underfunding of @DefraGovUK agencies. Even with staff, regulatory mechanisms weak so enforcement measures fail. Is government really delivering🤔 @NaturalEngland

An important day indeed! Looking forward to seeing the vast amount of detail on how all this will work - particularly how our underfunded environmental protection agencies are going to monitor farmers’ conduct that is so central to this re-distribution of such huge largesse
