In a recent CNN report, India's air pollution crisis was brought to the forefront, with a staggering 83 out of the world's 100 most polluted cities located in the country. Begusarai, a city in Bihar, was identified as the most polluted city globally, with an average annual PM2.5 concentration of 118.9 – a shocking 23 times higher than the WHO's guidelines. One of the primary contributors to this pollution crisis is the widespread practice of crop burning. Studies have shown that crop burning accounts for ~30% of the particulate matter emissions in the Indo-Gangetic Plain during the post-harvest season. This practice not only endangers the health of local communities but also amplifies the air pollution crisis throughout Northern India. In an earlier post (x.com/swaminathankp/…), we had proposed a solution to address this issue by incorporating a carbon sequestration component into the MSP formula for agricultural produce. By rewarding farmers for their efforts in sustainable agricultural practices, this reform would not only discourage crop burning but also create a win-win situation for both farmers and the environment. Besides, the payouts for this component could (partially) come from the industry, where large emitters can offset their emissions by compensating farmers using carbon credits. The consequences of failing to address air pollution in India, with its dense population, could be catastrophic. The ramifications extend far beyond environmental damage, posing serious risks to public health, agricultural productivity, and the overall well-being of our citizens. Exposure to polluted air and water can lead to a multitude of health problems, such as respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and a heightened risk of cancer. Furthermore, the degradation of our natural resources threatens food security, potentially worsening issues of malnutrition and poverty. These challenges not only endanger the well-being of our citizens but also hinder our nation's progress, challenging the misconception that economic growth must come at the cost of environmental sustainability. #MSP #KisanAndolan #Agripreneurship #ClimateAction
