@4wding @grandessaura @JEMlLYPRENTISS My zone needs 23-30 for the r value minimum on walls and standard brick-insulator-brick(with like a 3" gap) and with a backing wall with all the vapor stuff is like r20 at its best, tho I think brick might have a slightly lower requirement

Ok I think I have the perfect analogy to help the europoors understand how they are misunderstanding their houses for being insulated and American houses for not being insulated They think their houses, a heavy coffee cup, is a thermos, and our houses, a thermos, is a plastic water bottle

@proto_bit @JEMlLYPRENTISS Our homes are insulated and there's nothing complicated about a window!!! We don't need AC.

@davidquinn29999 @xjenl0 The edge case where they are only hit with light debris but somewhere where the wood can't take it but the brick can the brick is marginally better, the problem is that isn't what happens

@yaminfouzi ACs - increase temperature gradients, unhealthy to traverse - cause condensation that can foster mold - dry out the air Quite manageable, but very existing downsides

@davidquinn29999 @xjenl0 Marginal difference is negligible, the cons of brick are projectiles and collapse being worse, which far offsets the slightly higher resistance to light debris

@DeDgemaskerde @hskandts Subjective stat, people making hundreds of thousands of dollars have lifestyle creeped themselves into that, between the top 50 and 75 % is an income of 85-165k USD annually, if you are living paycheck to paycheck on that you are doing it to yourself

Brits are so poor they view 500 dollars to not die from heat stroke as something unaffordable and a luxury good
Tristan@Tenzur_

@twrIdd Yeah it's an expensive thing to purchase to endure 12 days of hot weather per year

@proto_bit @hskandts Did some math- a 5k BTU air conditioner, which is more than capable of cooling a 20x20 room (especially if it's only 25-30C outside, you could keep it on low) would cost a whopping..... £25 to run 12 hours a day for two weeks, based on Birmingham electric rates.

@planksdirect The real worst part of WW2 is that the entirety of Europe decided they want to larp as the 1600s versions of themselves when they were cool

@proto_bit I’ve lived in Europe for a long time. Americans aren’t ready to hear how dumb these people are. I sincerely believe post-Cold War Europeans might overall be dumber than anyone in the world. They also think they’re really smart. It’s absolutely wild.

@1865dsunny We know all about dealing with humid heat, your houses are built for 0-20c and ours are built for -40-40

Can't wait for it to cool down. Not because it's too hot, it's actually quite nice to just sit around outside, but so Americans will shut the fuck up about something they know sod all about.

Europe has thick, solid outer walls, windows that open inward, radiant heat (not forced-air), and a lot more apartments and multi-unit dwellings than the USA. It is not easy to retrofit any of these with AC in an aesthetically pleasing and practical way. Mini-splits with a remote control aren't it.

it does seem that the only people who seriously view "britain" as a thing inseperably connected to the concept of "europe" are americans
