Yesterday, a high powered delegation from WACCBIP, led by its Founding Director and Pro Vice Chancellor (ASA) @provcasaug, Prof. Gordon Awandare, paid a courtesy visit to the National Vaccine Institute. The purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities for partnerships that will advance vaccine research, innovation, and capacity building. Discussions focused on support for WACCBIP’s training programmes, empowering the next generation of African scientists to lead vaccine development efforts across the continent. #VaccineDevelopment #CapacityBuilding

I am honoured to be speaking in the #DELTASAfrica Scientific Meeting, taking place in South Africa between 28-30 July, 2025. This event brings together Africa’s leading scientists and stakeholders to advance scientific research and celebrate a decade of transformative impact through the DELTAS Africa programme. I look forward to contributing to discussions that will help shape the future of African science and take stock of the contribution of DELTAS Africa Programme to global science.

At the opening of #WRC2025, WACCBIP’s Founding Director, Prof. Gordon Awandare, starts with a brief on the global state of science. He notes that we are meeting at a time of profound uncertainty for research — not due to a lack of talent or innovation, but because of shifting political priorities in major donor countries. The recent change in government in the US, for instance, has already led to cancelled grants, discarded proposals, and entire research programmes being thrown into jeopardy. Prof. Awandare expressed deep solidarity with affected colleagues around the world and warned that science cannot continue to rely on systems so vulnerable to political disruption. “We hope this is temporary. That sanity will prevail. That responsibility will return, and that science will be restored to its rightful place in shaping global development.” - Prof @gordon_awandare

Let this be a call to African governments: support your scientists! We acknowledge steps already taken, like Ghana’s new Research Fund and efforts toward a national science policy. But it’s not enough — the pace and scale of investment need to match the potential we have. What we need is long-term commitment to research funding, better career paths for scientists, and policies that support innovation. “Research isn’t charity, it’s a smart investment and it’s time our governments start treating it that way.” - Prof @gordon_awandare
