Our work confirms prior research on the electoral insularity of sheriffs, while also showing the ethnic and electoral contexts where sheriffs do demonstrate responsiveness to constituent preferences.

We also find that selective responsiveness to white restrictionism actually increases in on-cycle elections, and persists regardless of the number of effective candidates.
