It's been five years since the Kamloops announcement. Among many questionable actors, the @nytimes still has not faced or acknowledged any accountability for its role in promoting a rash, confused narrative around that event. I don't normally post about politics and my personal life (and having been punished for it in the past, on here and offline, I do so with some trepidation), but I feel a need to express why this particular outrage still makes me tremble with sorrow (and if I'm being honest, anger). nationalpost.com/news/canada/fi…

@suzukisapers I just find it funny how Andor takes itself so seriously as a story about fighting fascism etc., and then every now and then someone mentions Palpatine and you're reminded that there's a cackling wizard with bad prosthetic makeup behind all this.

@ptchat I've also been surprised by how willing I've been to see the universe extended into different kinds of stories, different genres even — Mandalorian Season 1 is an episodic spaghetti western. Skeleton Crew is a kids' adventure flick a la The Goonies. I think it has range.

In seven years, #TheMandalorian went from being "the thing that shows #StarWars can still be good, actually, despite the sequel trilogy" to being the latest sign that the franchise is out of life and needs to die.

@suzukisapers Andor is good, but is it Star Wars? It's got none of the pulpy space-fantasy adventure that has always been essential to the series, and every time someone mentions Palpatine you can't help thinking the show is a bit embarrassed that it *has* to mention him...

@ptchat I think the best thing they made since the original trilogy was Andor. And the second best thing they've done for TV after Andor was Skeleton Crew. Both of those came out last year.

@amsacramone @WriterJonLeaf Ah. Well, I've heard many people make claims like this non-facetiously, so I'm easily triggered. (And I have a bad knack for not recognizing facetiousness online. But I do love the fact that "facetiously" has all six vowels in alphabetical order. As does "abstemiously".)

@WriterJonLeaf @amsacramone No it doesn't. Not unless you think the vision in Revelation is meant to tell us what the historical earthly Jesus looked like, sword-breathing and all.

@amsacramone The bible does say that Jesus's feet were like burnished brass, which is a sort of brown.

@matthewdmarsden @christianjbdev It also helped that Tarantino was clearly indulging himself (as a lover of Leonard *and* blaxploitation films) and not just mindlessly following some corporate mandate.

Whether you like it or not, after a decade or more of DEI hires in Hollywood, and actors treating their audiences with contempt, people will not go to see these movies just based on one piece of casting, because usually it’s not where the wokeness stops. The audience doesn’t trust Hollywood anymore.
Christian JB@christianjbdev

As I said earlier. Tarantino cast the protagonist of Jackie Brown who was white in the original novel with a great black actress. It totally worked, and didn’t come across as ‘woke’ in the least. So what’s the difference? You lot respect The Odyssey so much? Yeah, right.

@BreitbartNews Actually, the Christian (and thus Catholic) doctrine is fundamentally about *resurrection*, not just "heaven".

Stephen Colbert, a professed Catholic, says he believes that when we die, "there is some continuance of some kind. But it’s like a dispersion of the self into some other greater being. And I don’t have any other feelings beyond that.” This sounds more like the Gnostic concept of the Pleroma than the Catholic doctrine of Heaven.

It's just kind of amazing -- given all the "keys to the kingdom" stuff in Matthew 16 -- that Matthew is the only gospel that never makes Peter a focal point for the Church's moving forward after the Resurrection.

But Matthew? The angel at the tomb tells the women to tell the disciples -- but no disciple in particular -- to see Jesus in Galilee. And then the disciples do see Jesus in Galilee... and some "doubted". No indication as to whether Peter was one of the doubters or not.

I'm kind of fascinated by the fact that Matthew -- the gospel that supposedly makes the clearest case for Peter and his successors as leaders of the Church -- is also the only gospel that never mentions Peter by name after the Resurrection. Heck, even Paul's letters do that.

Zach Braff shares the most Harrison Ford interaction imaginable during THR’s Comedy Actor Emmy Roundtable: “I’m on the Warner Bros. lot in a golf cart with Harrison Ford, and one of the trams goes by with all the tourists in it and Harrison sort of just gently looks the other way. I go, ‘Do you ever wave?’ And he goes, ‘No … but I do feel bad about it.’” bit.ly/4wFvAXo

@LauraRbnsn The Academy does have a diversity quota that has to be met for a Best Picture nod -- but only for that one award, I think, and I believe it can be satisfied with any crew members, not just actors. Plus, Nolan already has a bunch of Oscars; this is a pure commercial play.

There are people, right now, who think that The Odyssey had to have a racial minority in the main cast in order to be nominated for an Oscar. They literally think that. A normal person cannot grasp how stupid these people are. You'd have to eat so much lead.

Bill Maher is, I just found out, half-Jewish on his mom's side. I am half-Jewish on my dad's side. He was raised Catholic. I was raised an atheist. But all of this stuff hits different if your family is part of the dehumanization campaign.

Episode 1 of #TheOldStoriesMoses is so short -- 18 minutes -- that I figured I could make a bit of time to whip up some notes. I also couldn't resist comparing how this film and another Ben-Kingsley-as-Moses movie made 30 years ago play with Kingsley's age. Link in next tweet.
