@novussubsole There’s a lot of interesting and very in depth research. I remember that at great expense, some academic institutions even commissioned exit polls to solely analyse the Russian vote in the 1996/99/01 prime ministerial elections.

Nah, neither this or Rabin’s assassination killed the peace process; Netanyahu still had to commit to it rhetorically at Wye River. What killed the peace process was the one-two punch of the failure of Taba and the Second Intifada

So, yes, this is the likeliest scenario, given the history between America and Iran plus Trump's penchant for half-baked deals Question is whether an unfinished MOU that says "Hormuz is open" actually gets commodities flowing again. Doesn't happen unless numerous commercial actors make expensive, risky decisions to send tankers back to the Gulf, restart production, etc. And they may hesitate to make that decision if the war ends with an MOU and deadlocked negotiations, which will look like an unstable status quo, at least in the short term

In the pessimistic scenario, the first-stage MOU moves forward and the Strait of Hormuz reopens, but the second-stage negotiations over the nuclear remnants quickly bog down. Services was a big reason why Britain ended up especially exposed to the financial bubbles of the 2000s and took as deep a hit from the 2008 financial crisis as it did. Again, something largely under Blair's watch-he was lucky to have jumped ship in 2007.

Non-contiguous states in the Balkans like Croatia have had generations of state-level boundaries that made managing the state (when it gained independence) easier. Let us make fair and reasonable comparisons based on the facts.

Moreover, the argument that it “didn’t benefit the Palestinians in the long-run” is profoundly wrong. The Palestinians made serious mistakes in the peace process. But this cannot justify Israel’s actions.

Annexing Ariel would deprive the Palestinians of most of the northern West Bank aquifer. Some of the Jerusalem area settlements seal off the

It does not strike me that, for the privilege of keeping settlers in large parts of the West Bank, Palestinians should absorb huge costs to their state’s viability.

When I found out that Israeli Arabs boycotted the first election that Benjamin Netanyahu won to become prime minister I really lost my mind dude. Turns out not voting for the lesser of two evils had generationally bad consequences. He would have easily lost if Arabs voted!

@Tcho76521726 @souljagoyteller Even if we grant that Israel offered 92% of the West Bank, such a state would have hardly been territorially contiguous. On Jerusalem, while Israel made progress on the issue of the Old City, the offer of only limited autonomy in “internal” Arab neighbourhoods made no sense. Etc.

@souljagoyteller Perhaps, but Taba was a complete mess and the Israeli negotiators went entirely sui generis. The draft proposal on refugees, for example, was something Barak opposed. Barak told Ben-Ami there was to be no use of the phrase “right of return”. Well, Yossi Beilin did the opposite.
