That a two-week pause has been agreed to, thanks to the efforts of Pakistan and other mediators, and that the parties are set to meet in Islamabad, is good news. This war of aggression against Iran was a clear violation of int. law and the UN Charter. Iran’s resolute response in self-defense demonstrated that the only viable path is via a strict adherence to Article 2 of the UN Charter on the peaceful settlement of disputes. Support for the new momentum has been expressed by many world leaders, which is a positive development. In parallel, there are two interrelated risks: spoilers and bad faith. The same spoilers are expected to reappear with actual attacks, fabricating incidents as well as media and social media disinformation campaigns to once again ruin the chance for diplomacy. The parties, as well as the int. community, must collectively thwart these risks. Bad faith is the ultimate scourge of diplomacy. In particular, based on previous experiences, the Americans must convince Iran that they are a genuine partner in protecring the momentum and in actual and respectful "give-and-take" negotiations. If all are genuine in their quest for peace and stability, this momentum needs to be cemented collectively. This will require extra effort to ensure the process becomes as nearly indestructible as possible. Remember that this episode was highly consequential for global energy and the economy; that alone should be reason enough to make the process as resilient and impregnable as possible.
