Wen mass adoption? Will PFPs die? Who gives a shit about the metaverse? I thought I would share some of my opinions on questions I get asked from time to time as a person who has been actively building here for a couple of years: - Mass adoption doesn't look like millions of people wanting to buy your jpegs for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Will some IP become so beloved that many people will want to collect parts of the inception point of that brand? Yes. Will this remain a niche? Also yes in my opinion, much like the market for valuable trading cards or anything collectible. There are healthy markets for this, but it is always connected to the ability to have fallen in love with a story, or connect to something emotionally. It must mean something. There are plenty of amazing IP brands in this space that have the ability to do this, and I am certain we will see the cult like collectible nature flourish, much like comic books, sneakers, and toys. When it comes to NFTs that aren't built around a large brand, I believe digital provenance on-chain will win out in the end as the concept of on-chain verification takes off or becomes essential. With the rise of AI, pretty soon we will be relying on blockchain verification to determine the validity of a source, with that concept accepted - NFTs will become the norm. The use cases and application of the tech will branch off into a multitude of avenues, and pretty soon we will stop saying NFT at all. - Will anyone be using PFPs in the future? In their current state, maybe not. In an evolved state - yes. The concept of digital identity is only growing, and the desire for flexibility of identity and how we are perceived online and irl is something we are seeing younger generations lean into, especially with the increased legislation around identity irl. I don't believe PFPs will be used in the same manner they are today, but spectrum of identity is something I believe in, and people having complete sovereignty over their own identities is something I can see gen Z and gen alpha especially adopting en masse. - Will anyone give a shit about the metaverse? As it is currently presented, probably not. What we have right now are environments and experiences being built in real time in their earliest stages by very talented future thinkers. How they evolve to enhance experiences and solve problems will determine their effectiveness when put in front of the average person. The ability to try on clothes with your avatar matched to your irl self? Amazing. The ability to travel through gaming worlds taking your assets with you? Amazing. The ability to experience events despite your ability to access them physically? Amazing. I personally see metaverse developments as something that will decentralize access to community, opportunity, and experience, so long term I am very bullish, though I understand right now the average person might not care at all. What are your thoughts on any of the points I made here? Agree? Disagree? Let me know - I would love to hear it!
