That's exactly what it means. Religion being protected means that you cannot be fired for your religious beliefs. Period. He can also practice in public life and it's not an issue because again it's protected by both federal law and the Constitution. The private company statement is irrelevant. There are federal laws that make it illegal for private companies to discriminate based on religion.
