Sadly, Wout van Aert will not be able to start in Omloop het Nieuwsblad on Saturday, as he has fallen ill. The winner of the 2022 edition of the race, will take his time to recover. Wout van Aert: “Obviously it’s a big blow for me to miss out on my first race, having prepared for the classics season the whole winter. We had a good training camp at Sierra Nevada and I was feeling really strong. But unfortunately, it’s also that time of the year where it’s easy to fall ill. I remain positive about the feeling I had on training and am confident that I will be able to return to racing soon. Just not this Saturday.” Wout will be replaced by Pietro Mattio.

A recent crash followed by illness has ruled out his planned participation. Vingegaard: “I was really looking forward to returning to the UAE Tour and am therefore disappointed that we have had to make this decision. However, the combination of the crash and subsequent illness made it necessary. It is better to fully recover first so that I can then focus on my next goals.”

@lucasaganronald Nowadays the riders are always sick. Jonas, Victor and Almeida also recently. Doing everything to stay health is a big competitive advantage.

@lucasaganronald He is still not back to 100% health. As long as the team doesn’t get it that it is a competitive advantage to stay healthy, they don’t deserve to win.

@qadRick @lucasaganronald Dude this isn’t 2020/2021 anymore. They literally just biked through crowds of thousands of spectators yelling right in their faces, like up the Angliru last Friday (see my vid). If someone else got covid it would have most likely been from that.

@laflammerouge16 First Jones, now Victor. This was preventable. Many riders in the peloton seems to be ill lately. Looks like covid even so nobody wants to use the C word. Just say it. Talking about it is first step. Next step: prevent it. It is very easy .
