This cost them about $1 trillion. The truth is, you cannot build systems like this exclusively on the logic of profit. You cannot expect to break even in 20 or 30 years. Projects of this scale are built because the government decides they must exist to serve the people. And this is a problem with systems that are strictly, or overwhelmingly, capitalist. If you leave every problem in your society to the spontaneity of the market, some challenges are so large and so unprofitable that you will never have sufficient incentive to solve them.

@carey_wedler They condemn visible violence while living on institutional violence. Every decree is backed by enforcement. Every enforcement is backed by force. Every force is justified with language. The state denounces violence most loudly when anyone notices its monopoly on it.

“Political violence has no place in the country.” Politics IS violence. Every law, every order, every command people with “authority” issue is underpinned by violence or the threat of it. If you don’t comply, someone with a badge, uniform, and weapon will *make* you comply. This system is nothing BUT violence, but the politicians who rule over you will lecture you about how unacceptable it is as if their power isn’t dependent on it.

Fun fact about the Directors Cup: UNC scored 114 of their 422 winter points in mens and womens fencing. There are 28 fencing teams in the entire country. If they did not have fencing teams, they would have finished 22nd in the winter - behind NC State.
