A brother and sister lived in a house with more rooms than they needed. Every morning the sister cleaned and every afternoon the brother read. They were happy. One Tuesday the brother heard a sound from the back hallway and closed the door. They did not discuss it. They ate dinner in the kitchen instead of the dining room. On Wednesday the sister heard the same sound from the library. She closed that door too. The brother moved his books to the bedroom. They did not discuss it. By Friday they were living in two rooms. The rest of the house was behind closed doors and neither of them had seen what was on the other side. On Saturday the brother said I think we should leave. The sister said where. He said anywhere. She picked up her knitting. He picked up nothing. They walked out the front door and locked it behind them and threw the key into the drain so no one would go in after them. They never said what they heard. When asked they said the house was fine. They said they simply preferred to live somewhere smaller.
