If you’re thinking about goals for 2026, I’m going to suggest something simple. Sub 30 5K. Sub 60 10K. Sub 2 hour half. Sub 4 hour marathon. Not because the internet will clap. Not because it sounds impressive at dinner. But because those benchmarks usually mean you’ve built a solid engine. Consistent training. Decent strength. Good habits. The kind that carry into the rest of your life. When I chase times like that, I’m not chasing ego. I’m chasing capacity. Heart health. Durability. The ability to keep showing up year after year without falling apart. It’s not about being elite. It’s about being strong enough to age well. Which one of those feels within reach for you right now? #running

I genuinely think you must do a local marathon before you are allowed to enter London marathon, we have people who get a ballot place and don’t even train properly.

@Carskn9 @stevemagness Just had a look at the Strava activities of three or four runners I follow with 3.50-4.10 marathon PBs. All of them essentially spent the entire time in Zone 2

@stevemagness You dont 'jog' a 4 hour marathon unless you are an elite runner. The word jog means effortless, 2z running. If youre z2 is at 4hrs for 42km that is truly impressive.

Most people don't understand running. It's why a non-runner will be more impressed by someone who jogged a 4 hour marathon than a kid who ran a 14 minute 5k In the sport, we obsess over what "fast" is, grading and judging ourselves Outside of it...no one has any freaking clue

@runliftrunlift @JimGalanes I think it should be capped at 2.5 hours, regardless of whether you’re a 2.5 hr runner or a 7 hour runner. Take that extra time and add in an extra run or two in the week - same mileage, spread the load. Do one run of 20 miles if psychologically they need it but otherwise 2.5 ok

@JimGalanes I understand and agree with your point about weekly training. But a 3-3.5 hour long run for a 4 hour marathoner is more specific than a 2 hour run. There should be at least one or two of those in my opinion.

I’ve coached a fair amount of runners in the 4:00-4:30 marathon range. I program long runs by duration and HR%, though late in training we will see what mileage they cover. A 3.5 hour long run at 11:30/mi covers about 18 miles. I’ll have them do that at least once, plus back to back 2 hour runs.

@KEdge23 They had a youth and prospects taken from them by 14 years of Tory rule which shut youth clubs, leisure centres, drove the cost of fun things up, legislated to triple to cost of uni and drained all sense of prospect and hope of outdoing the previous generations (for first time)

Cannot work out why 18-24 year olds vote mostly Green and Labour. Youth unemployment is sky high since Labour came in. Unemployment is higher in general. Taxes are higher, life is more expensive, stamp duty is higher, etc. Are the youth generally that brainwashed? Doesn’t take much research online to see the mess Labour makes of things. Greens would be catastrophic too.

Peter McCormack 🏴‍☠️🇬🇧🇮🇪
Minimum wage people… First job was a milk round, £12.50 for a whole morning starting at 5am. Second job paper round, £10. Third job in a factory putting inserts in magazines - £2.30 an hour. Fourth job in a factory putting handles on umbrellas - £2.80 an hour. No holiday pay, no guaranteed hours, no pension contributions, no paternity, no HR bollocks. Work hard or fuck off. We’ve bred young people to feel like job is deserved, endless benefits, endless ways to use HR if you are shit at your job. Finding good young people is very hard, some exist, so many are lazy, lack ambitious and whiny. Incentives matter.

@_eckk @UniteDyl @PeterMcCormack I am of course talking about this as a national policy, which has to work out for workers across the board. The fact yours happen to be 17 and living at home is not the norm and shouldn’t be used to plunge 20 year olds into financial hardship

@_eckk @UniteDyl @PeterMcCormack And if the your answer is ‘the 30 year old does a different job because of age/ experience’ then the issue is you’re underpaying the older worker for their skill, not overpaying the person who is on the legal minimum

@_eckk @UniteDyl @PeterMcCormack They might be living at home and their parents on benefits but the whole point of a national standard is that it accounts for those who aren’t in that situation I.e. those who have to be self sufficient at 18, of which there are plenty who don’t have family support etc

@_eckk @UniteDyl @PeterMcCormack Then you are employing people illegally as they have to be in education or training until they are 18. They can do part time training and work up to 20 hours per week but obviously you’ve said yours are doing 35 and getting 500 quid

They don’t “have to be in education or training until 18”. They left school at 16 and were unemployed until I gave them a job. They live with their parents. Plus, you’re missing the whole point of this. They wont have a job at all if minimum wage is increased and our businesses go bust. It’s not greed on my part, it’s literally survival. I take the bare minimum to pay my bills.

@_eckk @UniteDyl @PeterMcCormack They can’t be fresh out of school with no qualifications - they have to be in education or training until 18. So at worst they’ve got vocational training or 4 A Levels. At that age you can be paying rent, bills, etc so they need a wage that reflects that

They're fresh out of school with no qualifications, clearing £500 a week, including tips, for working less than 35 hours a week. As I said, they understand that they might lose their job if we have to pay them more. They'd rather have a job with decent pay, than no job at all.

@Johnny_Logo @PeterMcCormack It’s not comparable - one is a job you do when you’re at school to earn a bit of pocket money. You’re comparing that to jobs that people have to do to pay rent, bills and buy food etc, perhaps even support a family

@Johnny_Logo @PeterMcCormack That’s not a real job. Get a grip. The conversation here is about whether legal adults (past college age) should be paid a wage that lets them live independently as many of them do. Comparing their situation to you earning some sweet money as a 13 year old is disingenuous

@PeterMcCormack First job, was also a paper round on a weekend for £10 😅. I agree with you on the majority of what youve said, people lack the motivation to work and are have a sense of entitlement. However I see many of the cons and exploitation as to why we have many employment laws in place.
