I was born in the US, my family is from Mexico. I speak the language, I know the culture, i adore our fulture- all despite only ever able to visit once. Does that invalidate me?

El tema con los “pochos” en este y otros eventos no es si son mexicanos o no. Por ley, muchos sí lo son.
El tema es que, cuando se trata de representar, gran parte de los mexicanos no se siente identificada con ellos porque crecieron con una realidad cultural distinta. Porque, para muchos, ser “mexicano” significa mucho más que sólo la herencia genética: hablan poco o nada de español, no vivieron en México, no comparten muchas costumbres, humor, expresiones ni el día a día que moldea la identidad del mexicano promedio.
Es tanto así que la mayoría hace contenido para un público únicamente estadounidense o mexicoamericano, no para el público de México.
Eso no los hace menos mexicanos. Simplemente hace que, para un evento donde se supone que alguien representa a México, mucha gente no se sienta justamente representada.

@jjjjonahjameson @veizau I’ll give you an example of a very famous football player; Giovani dos Santos. His parents are Brazilian but he was born and grew up in Mexico, so he identifies as Mexican. He does have the Brazilian nationality but he identifies as Mexican only.
