🇧🇫Burkina Faso adopted a new labor code aimed at tightening labor market rules. The reform limits temporary contracts and strengthens worker protections. Most jobs in the country still remain informal and without written contracts. Burkina Faso’s lawmakers approved a new labor code on May 6 as the government seeks to modernize labor regulations and tighten oversight of the country’s job market. According to the Ministry of the Servants of the People, the new law is designed to support job creation, strengthen human capital, improve business productivity and boost competitiveness in support of national sovereignty. The reform introduces several major changes to labor rules. Fixed-term contracts will now be renewable only twice. Temporary employment activities will also face stricter regulation, including a one-year limit on worker assignments and equal pay requirements between temporary and permanent employees with similar qualifications. The new code also increases protections against abusive dismissals. Workers may now receive damages equivalent to 18 to 24 months of salary in certain dismissal cases. Authorities also revised procedures for handling collective labor disputes. Arbitration councils must now issue decisions within three months. The legislation introduces new provisions on workplace harassment, including updated definitions of sexual harassment intended to strengthen legal action against offenders. The government also extended breastfeeding leave for salaried women from 14 to 15 months to align with rules already applied to women working in the civil service.
