Of all the many people I’ve been writing about for my next book, #AnneofCleves has been by far the most enjoyable to explore. I was recently lucky to acquire this lovely copy of Holbein’s portrait of Anne. She’s scrubbed up rather well thanks to conservation by Francis Downing.

Russian propagandists claim that journalists from French channel France Info have visited Mariupol (Russian-occupied Ukrainian city that was heavily bombed by Russia in the beginning of the full-scale invasion, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing hundreds of thousands who fled to safety). According to the propagandists, French journalists have seen how quickly the city is rebuilt and how marvelously people live under Russia. I was able to find one article on France Info website and one on Radio France website (published in June) and read them with Google Translate. Apparently, Sylvain Tronchet, Radio France correspondent in Moscow visited Mariupol and Eric Valmir has written an article about it for France Info. I will link both articles below. In the texts, virtually nothing is said about the scale of destruction in Mariupol The focus is the rebuilding Russia is doing after it leveled the city to the ground. The horrible tragedies of the lives lost there due to Russian aggression are not mentioned. I would be grateful to both France Info and Radio France to comment on whether this is compliant to journalist ethics and human decency.
