Laying tile done right. Pure ASMR joy. ​Step 1: Prep your base. Comb out your mortar in straight, parallel lines using a notched trowel. Avoid swirling patterns—straight ridges allow air to escape easily when the tile is pressed down, preventing hollow spots. ​Step 2: Clean the edges. Use a small putty knife or margin trowel to clear excess mortar along the perimeter lines where your leveling clips will sit. This keeps thinset from squeezing up into your grout lines. ​Step 3: Back-butter for maximum bond. Don't skip this! Apply a thin, flat layer of mortar to the back of each tile. This ensures complete coverage and full adhesion to the subfloor. ​Step 4: Set and seat. Drop your tile into place and give it a firm press and wiggle to collapse those combed ridges underneath. Pop in your tile leveling spacers along the edges. ​Step 5: Lock it in. Slide your leveling wedges into the clips and clamp them down snug. This pulls adjacent tiles into a perfectly uniform plane, completely eliminating lippage. ​Take your time on the prep, and the final results will speak for themselves!
