You can track an army, cap its weapons, and try to contain its institutional power. But no framework exists to contain 120 million people (mostly young) when they collectively decide their country or their army is under threat. At that point, deterrence collapses. Sanctions lose meaning. Military calculations become irrelevant. An army can be constrained; a mobilized population cannot. On day 3 of an acute enteric infection with fever, another reminder of our vulnerability,cases and clinics and meetings canceled,lucky it started boxing day not Christmas! This is a specially busy work time in Egypt,all plans/appointments out of the window,Cleo never leaves me.

Yesterday we had our annual family Christmas lunch,we celebrate 2 Christmas’s. But like every Christmas I went to hospital in the morning for my inpatients,I had 4 patients in intensive care,spent enough time giving them and families emotional support. Or it wouldn’t feel right.
