@Rainmaker1973 So funny so co2 is clean now? Because I've been told repeatedly it's a pollutant and we need to reduce it to zero. 😂🤣 The gas lighting is strong
A groundbreaking carbon dioxide battery project in Ireland is repurposing a former fossil fuel power plant into a center for lithium free long duration energy storage.
Energy Dome and Google have signed a commercial agreement to develop a 23 megawatt 200 megawatt hour CO2 battery facility in County Offaly Ireland. The system is expected to begin operations by 2028.
Unlike conventional lithium ion batteries which face significant challenges with supply chains and rare mineral extraction Energy Domes technology draws on surplus grid electricity to compress and store carbon dioxide. During periods of high electricity demand the stored gas is expanded through a turbine to produce clean reliable power that is returned to the grid.
The project is situated on the site of a decommissioned peat fired power station. It has already obtained the necessary land rights planning approval and a 10 year grid connection agreement with EirGrid Irelands transmission system operator.
This initiative represents an important advancement in Googles partnership with Energy Dome to roll out long duration carbon based energy storage solutions across Europe North America and the Asia Pacific region.
The announcement follows a similar June 2026 agreement for a 19 megawatt 200 megawatt hour CO2 battery project in Arizona also located at a former fossil fuel site with Google backing. By converting existing energy infrastructure and avoiding reliance on rare earth minerals Google and Energy Dome are developing a scalable approach to strengthening the power grid and achieving reliable carbon free electricity around the clock.
