80 years to solve this mystery about the BVAF / Burma Volunteer Air Force . Two officers marked on the Rangoon memorial are now 'accounted for' because - they are already marked on european memorials and we know how they died. Jon Heyworth solved this one rafcommands.com/data/lost-twic…

It appears someone may have taken the occasional use of 'If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.' somewhat literally. For the avoidance of doubt: WW2Talk has no Bailey Bridges for sale or hire. New or old stock. (Sadly.) 😶

@rafcommands This is fantastic. My great uncle flew in WWII, he was shot down over Germany aged 23. I’ve found him and will now add his picture, so that he’s never forgotten.

The usual mention on significant #WW2 days. Anyone inspired to find more on a serving relative. We're a collective of obsessives, specialising in UK & Commonwealth subjects. Free, & always will be. It's often astonishing what the chaps can turn up. ww2talk.com/index.php

A memorial plaque marks the location where an RAF bomber crashed on this day, in 1943. The AW Whitley, from No. 24 Operational Training Unit, based at RAF Honeybourne, crashed 200 yards from Broadway Tower while on a training flight. The five-man crew were all killed.

So for the first time - the unaccounted airmen (whose cause of death is unknown) in the CWGC Database has dipped below 1500! .. we are just about 250 records away from getting up to 99% completion rafcommands.com/database/warde…

@BongoThePongo The Wapiti entered service around 1929, so any question of them being diverted for civilian use is near zero. Plus this definitely is not a Wapiti, as its much larger.. the answer might be in a civ regn ending with AAA..

@rafcommands I think there were civv surplus Wapitis? It does look quite big, Gypsy Moth? Bearing in mind Hinaldi was also an aircraft boneyard/dump is it something that crashed elsewhere in Iraq I wonder?
