@ragingummyfish @cdntradegrljenn Here's simply one example of many to help settle your stomach. 7 provinces In canada are gifted 22 bonus MPs in the house of commons. This constitutional requirement dilutes albertans representation in a so called democratic country. Can you square that circle? Didn't think so!

Respectfully, Alberta’s economic advantages, like our low provincial income taxes, high-wage energy jobs, and more affordable housing compared to Toronto or Vancouver are real. They stem from our resource base and conservative fiscal management at the PROVINCIAL level. But those strengths don’t erase the structural inequalities baked into Confederation that have widened for decades. Here’s the reality the “Alberta has it better” narrative misses: Massive net fiscal outflow Albertans send roughly $20 billion more to Ottawa every year than we receive back in federal spending and transfers. That’s about $4,167 PER PERSON annually or $285 billion* from 2007–2024 alone. We are by far the largest per capita contributor in Canada. Equalization reality. Alberta gets $0 in equalization payments (we haven’t received any since the 1960s). Yet our higher incomes mean we indirectly fund billions of the $26+ billion program that goes to seven other provinces. The formula treats our non-renewable resources in a way that permanently labels us a “have” province, even as federal policies limit our ability to benefit from them. Resource development blocked at the federal level- The Constitution says provinces own their resources, yet Ottawa has killed or delayed major pipelines (Energy East, Northern Gateway, Keystone XL delays), imposed Bill C-48/C-69, and layered on carbon taxes that hit our economy hardest. The rest of Canada happily cashes the cheques from Alberta’s resources while obstructing the very industry that pays for national programs. This isn’t “grievance politics”, it’s accounting. Alberta’s prosperity funds a federation that treats our economic engine as a cash cow while denying us fair say over its future. That’s why tens of thousands of Albertans a referendum in October. Not out of hatred for Canada, but out of exhaustion with a system that extracts without reciprocating. We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re asking for fairness in the federation we help bankroll.

I’m so proud of you, Alberta. We have exceeded the 177k required signatures to precipitate a referendum vote in October. No matter the outcome… I will be forever proud!

I said I wouldn’t discuss Canadian politics anymore, but lately I’ve been too frustrated to stay silent. With everything happening in Canada right now, I feel completely defeated. The breaking point was reached long ago. There’s simply been too much, for too long. I’ve been called a traitor to my country. I’ve been told to change my username. Five years ago, when I created this X account, I was the proudest Canadian you could imagine. I’ve always been the proudest Canadian. Growing up in Ontario, I lived for Blue Jays games and skating the Rideau Canal with a beaver tail clutched in my mittened hand. My country represented equality, prosperous living and unity. I truly believed that I lived in the best country in the world. Then my family moved to Alberta, and slowly everything changed. The inequalities imposed on Alberta became impossible to ignore—and they’ve only grown wider and more blatant over time. Canada brands Albertans as traitors for even thinking of leaving, yet offers no meaningful remedy for the structural unfairness that was baked into Confederation from the start. Alberta was locked into a permanently lesser value within the federation, forced to live under an unfairly calculated formula forever. The rest of the country demands endless transfers, equalization payments, and extravagant royalties, while simultaneously biting the hand that feeds it by deliberately obstructing the development of the very resources that bankroll those expectations. We want a divorce.
