We were collectively embarrassed when Galgotias University passed off a Chinese robot as their own. But how is pretending that Rashtrapati Bhavan has nothing to do with the British any different?

My column this week in @htTweets is about what Japan has meant to India. In this Instagram Age, Japan is a destination. But a century ago, it inspired Indians to do more than travel. Here is my favorite story about that period, which centers on a student at @StStephensClg It was 1905. A Hindu student, educated in a missionary school and then at St. Stephen’s College, whose thoughts and ambitions had been confined to his family and caste, began to hear about Japan’s victories in the Far East. With each passing day, his principal, the British missionary C. F. Andrews writes in Renaissance in India (1912), this young man, who had rarely thought about India as a whole, began to acquire a wider outlook. When, at last, news arrived that Admiral Togo had sunk the Baltic Fleet, he started to have sleepless nights, haunted by a vision of his country as a sad and desolate mother, claiming his love. Night and day, he could think of nothing else. In the end, Andrews writes, he decided he had to answer the mystical call that he had received. Giving up his inheritance and his comfortable middle-class prospects, he departed to serve in a plague camp, fearlessly risking his own life for the good of his countrymen. When last he heard of this student, Andrews added, the young man had joined the ranks of the Arya Samaj and was engaged in administering relief in famine-prone districts. It is by men of this character, Andrew solemnly concluded, that Young India is being built up.

"There has been a noticeable change in how much—and how pointedly—the foreign press reports on India. In the past, as the adage had it, a story from the subcontinent wasn't newsworthy unless it involved the death of one American, or ten Englishmen, or a thousand Indians."

@ashu221997 The latter reference is to QS. In 2004, Times and QS were unified. Now they are separate indices. Hence, the latter reference is to QS 2026. The point being made is about Tsinghua's significant relative advance since that time.

@rahulsagar Sir, many IITs dont send data to times rankings. Please see the QS rankings wherein our univs feature in top 150. Further, subject wise, they feature even in top 50.

@rahulsagar Hi Rahul, loved this piece! As a you g post grad student in 2009 I remember working with a Professor at MIT as an RA. He wad then working in Indian railways, and demographics. He had spent months at the London library, just digitising and gathering information on India.

A lovely portrait of David Malone's life and work. He was brilliant, open-minded, and kind - qualities one does not often find in the same person. I am deeply grateful to have been his collaborator & friend over the years. His impact spans continents and he will be missed dearly.
Shashi Tharoor@ShashiTharoor

The former Canadian ambassador to India, my friend David Malone, passed away on Monday – of his own volition. Medically-assisted termination of life is not legal in India, but it is in Canada, and David, suffering from cancer and Alzheimer’s, chose this route. My rumination on my last exchanges with him, and on life and dying: ndtv.com/opinion/on-a-f…
