When I was in Melbourne with time on my hands last last Saturday night, after I'd sussed out Parkville station, I took a quick trip down to Anzac to have a look at that station after dark for the first time. Here it is at platform level.

@AndyBTravels We certainly have them in places in Australia where signal visibility would otherwise be limited. It does point to the importance of route knowledge by drivers who need to be able to clearly interpret the signals they encounter.

I’ve noticed in Japan that there are signals beyond the opposite running track…. Is this uniquely Japanese?

@PeterTRoberts Punctuality is and has been excellent so far, but they have built-in lots of slack in their timetables for the startup phase. 10min offpeak intervals are just adequate, but 3min intervals at peak are impressive, and it will go to 5min all day with Airport and Melton line trains.

@railmaps I saw them on the weekend for the first time - workmanlike and a bit gimmicky as Melbourne architecture often is. Train frequency and punctuality was very disappointing. It ain't no metro.

Finally, an overview of the station from the east, showing the central entrance and tram interchange with canopy, plus the east side stairway/escalator entrance at left and the east side lift entrance. This place really shows off at night. I'll have to check Arden out next time.

There are also stairway and escalator entrances on each side of St Kilda Rd as well as a standalone lift on each side. This one has 3 levels: at the concourse below ground, then this level here, plus half a level higher to the footpath level with the top of those steps at left.

@fictillius I was just wondering about the impact of the new CAF Civity R sets themselves. Obviously they're predominantly about replacing outdated rolling stock and introducing dual mode propulsion, but I hadn't heard them being spruiked as reducing journey times specifically.

@railmaps The whole package of works is 15-25 mins faster - three of the items contributing to that are faster speeds for the NRF, a new timetable and an express service. Some of the level crossing works contribute 6/7 seconds

A $100m upgrade will cut the Canberra-Sydney train trip by just 15 minutes. (Politicians caught lying stealing extra time savings as a result of the new regional fleet, a separate project funded by previous state governments) southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/9244725/…

South Australia is officially joining the world-famous MICHELIN Guide, and it’s the first destination in Australia ever to be included. Which restaurant do you think should be included?

@just_plain_Rick @LachlanB_ It's not for me to say whether that's weird or not because I do that sort of thing with maps of all sorts of places around the world that I'm unlikely to ever visit. :-) I'm so glad my map is of interest.

Hey @railmaps was it you who did that absolutely brilliant version of the Melbourne tram network map that made the PT official version look like a kid had done it with a crayon? If so, where can I find it? If not, who was it....? 🤔 Really want to find it again.

@LachlanB_ Do you mean the new MetroTunnel? It's the light blue line that runs through from Sunbury in the north-west to Cranbourne and East Pakenham in the south-east If you mean the XTrap2 trains, they're coming to the yellow Upfield and Craigieburn lines, but you prob won't see them yet

@railmaps That's the one. Perfect 👌🏻 Thank you. On another note, what line are the new trains running on? If I want to try one out which line to head for?
