Cats have their own protector in heaven: Saint Gertrude of Nivelles.
She was a 7th-century nun who lived from 626 to 659 and is known as the patroness of travelers, hotel owners, and—most importantly—cats.
It is believed that praying to Saint Gertrude can help get rid of mice and other rodents. But what about the cats themselves? In those times, only furry domestic cats could withstand plagues and rodent-borne afflictions.
So if you want to pray for the health of your cat—whether sick, recovering after surgery, or simply needing guidance through life—you turn to Saint Gertrude of Nivelles.
She is often depicted on icons with cats in her arms.
Saint Gertrude was canonized not only for her love of cats, but she remains the only saint specifically recognized as the patron saint of cats. Many people have verified that she very quickly and effectively helps cats cope with their problems.
Saint Gertrude of Nivelles is a saint of the undivided Church, meaning she is equally revered by Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Interestingly, Orthodoxy approves of cats—they are even allowed to enter the temple.
