One crucial takeaway for me over the past decade is how every politician, judge, lawyer, actor, cricketer, phalana-dhamkana suddenly becomes an expert on Sanatana Dharma. We can’t even quote the Hadith, forget offering an opinion on it - without risking our heads. But Hinduism? That’s fair game. Every day, it’s "Hinduism is this, Hinduism is that" - a never-ending free-for-all of assumptions and half-baked commentary. Many are eager to present what they call ‘critical analysis’ of religion, wearing it as a badge of liberalism. But the moment the same scrutiny is applied to their own beliefs? A resounding, deafening CHUP! Palpable fear. Marna hai kya? And of course this too, not before being thrown back at the Hindus with accusations of bigotry, communalism, and ‘Hindutva! This is a questionable decision and a pity. Undeniably Shibu Soren did much to promote tribal welfare and secure Jharkhands’s status as an independent state. But he took a bribe as a serving MP to vote in a particular manner : he abused his office and would have been prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act were he not rescued by a then dubious 1998 Supreme Court decision ( by a majority of 3-2) holding that the right to vote was part of Parliamentary privilege ( even though the vote was motivated by bribery) , a decision which has mercifully been overruled in 2024 by a 7 judge Bench of the Court. The 2024 judgement held that corruption and bribery “ subvert the Rule of Law and damage the functioning of Parliamentary democracy” At one stroke, the award of the Padma Bhushan to Soren, reflects a cynical view on corruption, undermines the Rule of Law and Parliamentary Democracy, ignores a 7 judge Bench of the Supreme Court and in the ultimate analysis devalues the Padma Bhushan itself. Hopefully this is an aberration and rampant electoral success is not deflecting the NDA from it’s core values
