Why are open standards for messaging interoperability important? Ironically the team that worked on Google Talk described it best: Client Choice, Service Choice, Platform Choice: web.archive.org/web/2021030604… #DMA #XMPP

@BBCWorld “In response, Musk's site blocked the Commission from making adverts on its platform.” This is factually wrong. They were banned because they tried to game the system. bbc.com/news/articles/…

@aakashgupta I wonder if they'll let me choose to open all links in an external browser, if so, I'd be grateful. If not, I'd be just as annoyed as almost every other app that forces me to use their browser and possibly tracks all my browsing there.

Nikita is telling you exactly where X is headed, and most people are missing it. “X will soon have no technical ability to do keyword suppression or manual downranking.” X is building toward a system where the algorithm literally cannot be overridden by humans. Pure AI, pure engagement signals, no manual levers. Musk announced the same thing in September. Full Grok-powered recommendations by November, open-sourced every two weeks. The 3x increase in link views since October tells the real story. For two years, X optimized for time-on-platform. Links got deprioritized because clicks away meant less ad revenue. Musk said this publicly in October 2023. Standard platform economics. Nikita’s job is to reverse that. The new link viewer keeps posts visible while you browse external content. X still gets the engagement signal. Creators get their reach back. Links stop being punished. That’s genuinely good product thinking. The journalist comment is even more interesting. “Journalists are some of the most obsessive users of the platform. If we could get them back to posting their stories, users will have access to the complete picture on all issues.” Nikita is saying X needs news distribution to win. He’s rebuilding bridges that got burned. The flat org structure detail matters too. Nikita, the algo team, and the chat team all report directly to Musk. No layers. No politics. Decisions ship fast. If Nikita executes on this vision, X becomes what Twitter was supposed to be: real-time information, properly distributed, with transparent ranking. The question is whether the org can stay disciplined when Musk gets into his next fight with a journalist. But the architecture he’s describing? I love the direction.
Alex Heath@alexeheath

Takeaways from my interview with @nikitabier: - He says X's algorithim will soon have no technical ability to do "keyword suppression or manual downranking" - New algo "operates entirely off user preferences on what they engage with" - Link views are up 3x since the new link viewer launched in Oct - “Journalists are also some of the most obsessive users of the platform. If we could get them back to posting their stories, I think users will have access to the complete picture on all issues.” - "We’re not going to suspend people because of their viewpoints, but we will tell you where it’s coming from” - Internally, X is very flat, with Bier, the algo team, and the Chat teams reporting directly to @elonmusk More here: sources.news/p/x-wants-its-…

@tweets_nika That is a separate but equally worrying topic. Either everyone will have to ID, or your behaviour needs to be analysed to flag you as possibly under a certain age.

This proposal, more aptly known as #ChatControl is like having to put your letters through a scanner for approval, unknowing what it will look for, before sealing the envelope. It is fundamentally incompatible with open protocols, and the optionality is a smoke screen.
EU Council@EUCouncil

The EU is reinforcing its efforts to protect children from sexual abuse. Member states agreed their position on a new regulation requiring online platforms to prevent, remove & block abuse material, with stronger national oversight and a new EU centre to support victims. More⬇️

If not, the last resort is the @EUparliament. There can be no acceptable compromise that keeps the concept of client-side scanning (even if "voluntary") or weakens end-to-end encryption.

I am happy that The Netherlands, along with a few other countries, has been opposing this proposal. The @EUCouncil must reject it outright as it is ineffective and all but mandates dangerous, unverifiable mechanisms for vetting all communication (except governments!)

@brabantalert Gas geurstof mehoela.

@brabantalert Even jullie website achter Cloudflare hangen.

So, @aegeanairlines - just a few days before our family flight, you are separating a family of 5 (2 of them being toddlers) in scattered seats? Despite us paying up for seats and the ForFamilies package? And no option to address that online?
