Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) acquired total of 34 Lightnings including single-seat F.53 fighter variants and two-seat T.55 trainers. Delivered 1966-1968, they were used to protect Saudi airspace and train pilots in high-speed interception during period of growing regional tension

Enjoying this coffee table book; pilots love watches, often the bigger, the better. I only have two watches I care about. I want to pick up more someday, to hand down – it’s similar to jewelry for women – but the timing doesn’t usually align w/ my checking account. The first is my Omega Seamaster. I bought it as a gift to myself at the end of my first deployment, using the money I saved in taxes from being in a combat zone, the $3.50 per diem & the money saved by not spending on food or booze, as we were basically trapped on base. It’s the closest I could get to a James Bond watch; I bought it in Abu Dhabi for about $2,500 in 2007. I think that was a pretty good price, but it was still very expensive at the time. The second is an inheritance from my father. It’s a pilot watch made for the US military in 1969, specifically for Vietnam. My dad wasn’t a pilot, so I’m not sure how he came to have it, other than by some kind of potentially shady deal or a bet, either of which probably went down in a bar. Anyway, it’s what he wore while deployed to Vietnam & is in pretty good shape. It’s made by Hamilton; it’s not terribly expensive to get one on EBay, but it’s priceless to me. Both need service, and I’ve decided to get serious about that. I see a lot of younger pilots with Apple Watches, and I appreciate the utility of that, but the classics have something to say…and won’t die out on you after a day, or particularly rough conditions. You don’t just throw them away when they stop ticking, either. Looking back, I wish I’d have participated in any of the opportunities to buy one of the military jet watches that the manufacturers do limited runs of. They’ll make maybe 500 or so with a special watch face for crews; I’d say Breitling is the most famous for it, but many others do it, too. Might have to buy one second hand…but the implications of that are kind of sad to me, too. Maybe it’s better to go to someone who will appreciate it, but still, sad.

Some pretty interesting footage from 1988 of 36th TFW F-15's out of Bitburg being directed by a backseat combat photographer on how to setup for each shot. I've never heard a SSgt. talk that forcefully to an officer but I guess you have to in this situation.😎
