Herath poshte once again. This is today’s lunch. I miss ma even more today and am thankful to her that I could learn Kashmiri cuisine her from. Her culinary skills like my nani’s were exceptional and am not exaggerating. I still remember that even after the exodus, some of our Kashmiri Muslim family friends would drop by only for her gaad-batt (fish-rice). One of the many reasons why I love Bharat is the variety of cuisines we have. It’s a melting pot of aroma, flavours, texture and taste. What fascinates me about my home food is the fact that Kashmiri food is tasty even without the flavour enhancers like garlic, ginger, onion, tomato or green coriander. Our everyday food does not use any of these and yet the dishes are flavourful and delicious. We have different food items for winter and for summer and each is better than the other! Be it the simplest of dishes like the green haakh (just salt, heng, oil, water and red khadi mirch) or roganjosh, yakhin or dumolu- the texture, aroma and the taste are unique even though the basic spices are the same. Here’s to celebrating our culture, our mothers, grandmothers, family and the rituals that give us a chance to come together and enjoy. #Mahashivratri #HappyMahaShivratri

A young man rushes home, beaming with excitement. “Mom,” he says, “I’m in love. I’m getting married!” Then he grins and adds, “Just for fun, I’ll bring over three women tomorrow. You guess which one is the future Mrs.” His mother agrees. The next day, he arrives with three stunning women. They all sit on the couch, chatting and laughing for a while. Finally, the son turns to his mom and asks, “Alright, Mom. Which one do you think I’m marrying?” Without missing a beat, she says, “The redhead sitting in the middle.” He stares at her, shocked. “That’s incredible! You’re right! How did you know?” She shrugs and says, “I don’t like her.” 😂🤣😂🤣

It is that time of the year again. I will be giving out about 50 to 75 signed (signed by me not by the author 😀) copies of one of my all time favourite investing books to my X community. (Not the stupid, 3rd rate pirated books from @Flipkart so not to worry). I will select the people getting the book on the basis of replies to this tweet.

@haniya_445 I can definitely tell you it's a rumor. As a reader, you should roar on the bank of a river that a swimmer may be slower than a runner even if he/she is at the rear of a race. Plus don't know why it all reminds me of a reactor.

In 2002 at the age of 50, my parents decided to invest their entire life’s savings of 2L into down payment of a house. We had stayed all our life in lajpat nagar, a part of south delhi that south delhi wasn’t happy to claim as its own. We had heard of a suburb called Faridabad. It was in another state called Haryana. To us it was really far. Trunk call far. Very soon it dawned upon us that Faridabad was the only place we could afford a house. Dad took a loan for 8L, with an EMI of 7,000 on a salary of 25k. There was no YouTube at that time, to tell him that he was defying all finfluencer logic, by taking this rash step, 10 years away from his retirement. In a year, he was fired from his job. It wasn’t his first time. But he wanted it to be his last. Tired of working for someone else, he decided to start on his own. But he didn’t have it in him. A competitive industry, thriving in generic drugs, where brand was the premium and everything else a commodity. He lost money. Took loans. The first default of the EMI happened. It became a regular affair. No one knew. I was in the US, studying, but also managing to send home 15k per month. I wasn’t sure if that was ever used. In 2004, I returned from the US dropping out of my education, devastating my parents and snatching away the only hope they had of a bright future. But the 2 years I was there, h had saved up. A lot. 7L. One day papa calls me “Nandu, do you have some money?” “Ofcourse papa. How much do you need?” “10,000” “Yes yes papa. I have. I have more. Do you need more? What do you need it for?” “For the home loan EMI” “Of course papa. I will pay it directly today itself. Share the details.” At this point he broke down. Nothing prepares you in life to see your father cry. Nothing. He kept sobbing. And thanking me. “Why are you thanking me papa? This is the least I can do for everything you have done for us.” Nothing I could say in this moment would have saved the moment. He was just tired. Tired of fighting. Of trying to build a life for his family despite all odds. Tired of fighting with money, for money. By the time I had graduated from business school, the business loans had piled up to 16L. I graduated with a loan of 15L. On the first day of my job, I knew I was down 30L. Papa continued to work till 2009, odd jobs, partly to keep himself busy but mostly out of guilt, I reckon. He made all the rookie mistakes that one can make with his money. He bought LIC policies, ignored the 20-30-40 rule, bought penny stocks for quick returns, bought chit funds, misused credit cards. But in the end, he did deliver. He raised a family, gave quality education of his 2 kids, a roof we could call our own, food, clothes, love, values. He is a failure in the eyes of every finfluencer. But he is the baap of one! Because he taught me what it means to survive and persist. He taught me it’s ok to bloom late. As long as yearn to bloom.

Old timers got it right. And when you're poor, you don't have much choice. So our parents, their parents, did what they thought best back in the day. Bought their house the hard way - slogging, saving, without home loan, borrowing from friends and family. Bought gold because gold is gold. Didn't understand stock market so stayed away. Bought an insurance policy because LIC is LIC and you get bonus. Look what it got them. Their kids got a home. That's the best security in a poor country. No home loan. They got the LIC policy. They got gold. All great products worth security and when you're poor, security means a lot. Sure they missed the Infosys IPO but they also missed so many scams. What did they do? They sent their kids to schools, colleges, and in a liberalised open India, these kids became VP, senior VP, in banks or IT firms and made more money than their parents and bought even bigger homes. And got very lucky with ESOPs. This is what education and economic reforms got for them. Now their kids. Gen Z. With the security of parents who worked in MNCs, in the comfort of their 4BHK in Lower Parel. They write long posts on social media about how old India didn't have choice and invested in "garbage" like LIC policies, FD, gold, etc. Whereas the cool way is to log on to an app and invest in an index fund. Sharam karo saalon. Your grandparents and your parents saw what the real India was. Have some respect. For likes and follows you're ignoring and forgetting what India used to be and how prior generations gave their best and came out with results they're proud of. Sharam karo.
