I go to a lot of sport. Write about a bit of it, complain about most of it. Press Association correspondent for Cambridge United, dabbling in BBC commentaries.

I’ve seen Cambridge United lose midweek at Hyde and Southport and Salisbury. I’ve just seen them win at Newcastle, one of the greatest results in the history of the football club. The FA Cup will always be important.

Neil Harris: "How good was Tuesday's point? I talk about every point, every clean sheet's vital. If you can't win, don't get beat because when you back it up like today you go 7 points in a week, that's a great effort. Everyone's played their part. It's been a huge week for us."

Kylian Kouassi is back out with a strained hamstring. Might be back at the very end of the season.

Neil Harris: "Outstanding performance, brilliant result against a good side. But are we happy with that? No no. At the start of the season we said 72 might be enough to get in playoffs. We’ve chased 70 for 6 weeks, now let’s chase the 80-point barrier and see where that takes us"

Any worries of a wobble following a few recent draws dispelled with that. Absolutely nobody can question that's a thoroughly deserved Cambridge United win, should have been more than 1-0. Five points clear of Salford, close the gap on MK Dons, excellent start to the afternoon.

U’s well on top. Salford surprisingly limited, which is encouraging that you can get at them but makes it disappointing that United aren’t ahead. Create those chances again and Lavery scores when he’s on, though Salford will surely come out with more intent too.

Cambridge United lost at Notts County at the end of October, since when they’ve now gone a half season of 23 League Two matches with only one defeat. Frustrating evening tonight but fantastically placed in the automatic promotion places with nine games left.

U’s didn’t kick on at all after half time. Gibbons with two massive blocks and Walsall hit the post so you should never be too down about an away point and clean sheet. But there’s got to be a frustration about how little threat they offered at the other end.

Ben Knight huge chance right at the end of the half stopped it being a carbon copy of Chesterfield and Crawley away. Reasonably low key half with few openings but U’s playing with a good level of control, in a position to be a bit more expansive as the game goes on.

Neil Harris: "Training last week was immense and we’ve just performed like that. Was that a coincidence? Possibly. Were Gillingham not at it? Possibly. But you have to put teams to bed and today we were ruthless. That’s what the scoreline should have been last week and it wasn’t"

Neil Harris on Dom Ball: "That's his first goal I've ever seen him score in training as well as a game so well done to Dom."

Cambridge United had scored 50 times in 35 league games this season, then added 10% of that number in pasting Gillingham 5-0 today.

2-0 flattered Gillingham more than it did Cambridge at half time, 5-0 at the end doesn't flatter Cambridge in the slightest. Total demolition job. The first time United have scored five since October 2020, the first time they've done it at home since May 2018.

Not seen a more total domination over 45 minutes all season. Cambridge winning plenty of set pieces and threatening from them, playing in behind the defence at will. Gillingham look dreadful. Being 2-0 down at half time flatters the losing team more than the U’s.

MATCH REPORT ✏️ U's 1-1 MK But while two points disappeared at the death and supporters had the afternoon to debate the award of the spot-kick, does a converted penalty do much to change how the U’s had played? Read @ramsaymatt's match report here 👇 undertheabbeystand.com/p/united-1-1-m…

When referee Declan Bourne was last at the Abbey he was carted off with an injury that kept him out for 2 months. He wasn't given much sympathy from Cambridge United fans. On his return there today, awarding a 96th minute penalty denied the U's a huge victory. The Bourne Legacy.

Neil Harris: “They’re a really good side, a club ready to go. That’s what we’re battling with, and we are battling. That’s why I praise my players, who have done bloody brilliant. That’s why it’s a strong point today.”

Neil Harris: "It’s a really strong point. We’ve got ourselves into a wonderful position with 12 games to go. Swindon have already not won so we’re going to be in the top 3 come the end of the day. If you’d said that to me at the start of the season I’d have snapped your hand off"
