In case anyone is wondering, Thune is predicting the Michigan Wolverines will come out on top for this year’s March Madness 🏀

NEW: A filibuster amendment vote during SAVE Act debate would be "counterproductive" & stoke divisions, Thune warns the GOP in an interview with me & @DISivak. "I don’t think that serves anybody’s interest," he said. "I think that trying to create this intra-Republican, intra-family fight or division over an issue that clearly isn’t going anywhere seems counterproductive to me." washingtonexaminer.com/news/senate/44…

Thune told us he has plans to use the upcoming two-week break to help GOP candidates campaign and fundraise but signaled those trips would be scrapped in light of the shutdown.

In an interview, Thune expands on his plans to cancel the April recess over the DHS shutdown: “If that’s what it takes,” Thune told @ramsberry1 and me. “I can’t see us taking a break here in the next week if DHS isn’t funded." “I just think we’ve got to fund the government. We can’t have a break like that, and continually have TSA not being paid and other government employees not being paid.” washingtonexaminer.com/news/senate/44…

New—Rand Paul skipped the SCIF meeting w/Mullin but will still hold committee vote tomorrow Spox tells me: "Senator Paul already knows he can’t support the nominee, but he wanted to ensure all committee members have the information they need to make their own decisions. He knows enough to know how he is going to vote. He facilitated the meeting to make sure everyone else got the information they needed."

Paul says he's "still willing to have the vote tomorrow but I can cancel." He and Ranking Chair Peters wants Mullin to go to SCIF & disclose details of classified official foreign trip he took roughly a decade ago but Mullin says he lacks clearance to reveal info

Sounds like Paul, Peters and Mullin will head to SCIF following hearing to discuss this trip. Paul indicated it's a requirement to learn more before he allows vote to move forward

Fetterman (D-PA) acknowledges he could be deciding vote to advance Mullin out of committee but says he's undecided "I came with an open mind, and I'm going to maintain that. That was always my commitment" "I haven't been rocked by some kinds of mic-dropping kinds of moments"

Brutal opening from a Republican: Rand Paul opens Markwayne Mullin confirmation hearing and confronts him about having said Paul deserved being assaulted. "I just wonder if someone who applauds violence against their political opponents is the right person to lead an agency that has struggled to accept limits for the proper use of force."
