it’s easy in the abstract to take a political goal and chart out the mathematically optimal path for achieving that goal. the difficulty comes from when it runs into the messy realities of granular deterrence. for example, suppose you’re a star bellied sneech nationalist, and the occupation murders five sneeches - the mathematically optimal trade to make there is almost always going to be to *not retaliate* and instead convert the incident into “sympathy”, which in a wealthy, high-leisure society is going to be one of the prodrugs of political influence. but that’s not always going to be an option due to the constraints of martial honor. izzat makes reprisals obligatory, if the sneech faith has izzat. i think african americans skipped a lot of the usual roadblocks because by the time the civil rights era rolled around most of their population had already been forcibly converted to christianity, and christianity is an outlier among global values systems in which “forgiving your abuser” is weirdly regarded as virtuous rather than sinful. but that’s more of a silver-lining to the profoundly negative experience of being colonized, as a micronationalist i could never in good conscience recommend that another group of people facing oppression convert to christianity in order to escape oppression. now this obviously doesn’t apply here, most clearly because the antebellum south *was* christian, and it’s kind of mind boggling that their slaves were able to fully exploit the terrain of their own faith more than they did. but i observe a lot of folks on this site who seem genuinely mystified as to why various minorities keep doing things that are “obviously self-destructive” and i just wanted to point out that in a lot of cases, it’s not because of stupidity or emotional immaturity, there really is just a fundamental cultural incompatibility going on, where two groups of people can have wildly divergent ideas of what makes a “good” person.
Dilan Esper@dilanesper

this You can say the same thing about the civil war. Had Southern whites just said "damn, Lincoln won, we'll beat him in 4 years though" they would have been able to keep doing what they had been doing. But they were hotheads.

i think, as a fundamental moral principle, that if you think X group of people is overpaid, then your remedy should be to switch into that field, and attempt to collect the windfall yourself you will discover one of two things: 1. you can’t actually switch into that field, due to some barrier to entry, such as tracking, physical traits, nepotism, etc. this tells you the problem is the barrier, not the “excessive” pay, and you now know the correct target to blame 2. actually the job sucks more than you imagined, and the workers are not actually overpaid either way, “X group of workers make too much money” is a profoundly low agency mindset.
Richard Hanania@RichardHanania

This isn’t how it’s supposed to work! You don’t just arbitrarily pick a few jobs and make the salaries arbitrarily high. Organized labor represents a deep civilizational failure. This is what destroyed the European economy as I explained here. richardhanania.com/p/labor-freedo…

Ok, do I know any MtFs that want me to be their project for a month? I don’t know a damn thing about fashion, hair, makeup or any other aspect of womaning.
Daniel Ogburn@danogburn

@RealDianeYap You should, as an experiment, take the pink pill and start looksmaxxing for a month. Give yourself or find someone to give you a makeover and let us know how it goes.

to be clear, i’m not saying bet on blue (betting is Evil!) the truly risk-averse course of action would be for me to convert all of my assets to euros but i cannot sell my US equities because there simply aren’t enough european companies to invest in perhaps i am much poorer than my bank thinks i am

i think there is a much greater chance than 22 percent that the GOP will win in the midterms, due to them simply overwriting (“rigging”) the election results. if that happens your US dollars are pretty much worthless, as by then, we could safely conclude that US democracy will have ended, permanently.

i find guys like Yglesias struggle to comprehend trump policy because deep down, they still think Trump is team USA trade with Canada was bad for him, because the Canadian bureaucracy doesn’t answer to his authority. it dilutes his authority, when US citizens can trade freely with entities that do not answer directly to the US executive isolating subjects from external relationships is a textbook abuser tactic! this is an example of a setting where a framework like Feminism is much more useful than a framework like Economics sure, trade with Canada is good for Americans, but it’s bad for Trump! why would Trump (or anyone for that matter) not act in his rational self-interest? you cannot seriously expect him to act in your best interests because his interests are just fundamentally not aligned with you.

Trump’s China policy is a total disaster: — Picking irrelevant trade battles with friendly countries — Giving away the store on advanced chips — Derailing American energy with a perverse crusade against wind and solar slowboring.com/p/trumps-china…

i wouldn’t have a problem with people only thinking AI is conscious, or people only thinking AI is a godlike moral entity, but the fact that those two currents are emerging simultaneously is exceptionally dangerous. it should be completely irrelevant how ‘true’ either statement is in isolation. you should never, ever allow an entity to come into existence that is regarded as both godlike and possessing emotions, that is a fast path to a dystopian future i want no part of. sometimes, we must reject beliefs that are factually true, if it would result in a terrible societal outcome.
Key 🗝 🦊@KeyTryer

I generally agree that LLMs are not coherent entities, but the common wisdom that NNs (And even transformers) could not "understand" or "experience" anything is massively wrong. I feel that people who repeat this are really intellectually incurious.

i concede that AI is useful in my personal life. i am senior and entrenched enough in my career that i have little, personally, to fear from AI displacement. but we must accept the fact that pro-data center policies kill every movement and candidate they touch. this stuff is just really unpopular, and worse, i don’t see any of the AI proponents even making much of an effort to detoxify the brand.

i see more and more abundance builder personalities doubling down on “this is why populism is STUPID this is why america should be a REPUBLIC and not a democracy” and i just have to ask - you people don’t apply this logic to literally any other issue! you would never say that we should defund the police (even though it’s the morally correct stance) because you all instinctively understand that embracing a 20–80 policy is electoral suicide. so why is AI different? is this really the hill you want to sacrifice the Democratic party on?
Semafor@semafor

AI backlash is growing in the US, especially among young people. Polls show that 70% of Americans think AI is moving too fast, over 50% have negative views of it, and just 18% of young people say they feel hopeful about it. semafor.com/article/05/18/…

that said, i seem to have an island of stability of sorts among a specific archetype of militaristic NATO-stan liberal. i’ve accumulated a small garrison of NATO mutuals who i love and adore. it’s the free inquiry archetype of liberal that really grates on me, for some reason

despite being right wing myself, i find i get along best with “progressives” and extreme left wingers. other right wingers are okay, depending on level of transphobia. i get along worst with centrist/liberal types, especially “free inquiry” personalities.
