Let’s think about the Realpolitik here: 1. Carney is currently in India negotiating on trade. Prime Minister Modi just a positive meeting with Netanyahu in Israel barely a day prior to the attack—India is aligned against Iran. Why jeopardise trade talks by issuing an opposing statement? 2. Poilievre continues alleging Carney entered a “Security Partnership” with China. False, and this statement completely dispels that notion, since China and Iran are aligned. Why give your political opponents more fodder against you? 3. We are going into CUSMA talks with the US. While we can’t expect a good deal, inflaming things by issuing an opposing statement that we can do absolutely nothing about only has downsides to talks. Issuing a supporting statement helps to neutralise the idea that Canada is a threat. Why give the US ammunition to consider Canada a threat? 4. The Iranian diaspora in Canada have the most vested interest in this war. They are politically motivated and this is the issue they will vote on. No other group is likely to have this as their #1 issue. The Conservatives will support it anyway, so they aren’t an outlet for voters mildly upset over this statement. Why lose politically support by issuing an opposing statement? 5. Geopolitically, this is a distraction for the US away from Canada, and away from trade. It draws American attention from the “Monroe Doctrine” of focus on the Western Hemisphere back to the Middle East. It will also push up oil prices which will benefit Canada economically and help to calm the situation in Alberta. Why not allow your adversary to be distracted, boost your economy, and quell separatism?
